December 12, 2014

Hi Everyone!

It looks like a sunny weekend ahead of us.  I hope you all have a chance to get outside and enjoy it!

It is finally time for the children to perform at the Christmas Concert next week.  The students have been working very hard and are still singing the songs with enthusiasm (despite already having sung them dozens of times :)).  It is also the last week of school which means we will be celebrating Christmas together on Friday afternoon.

Concert Reminders
*dress rehearsal 1:00 on Monday (please have your child wear pajamas (or bring a set they can easily slide over their clothes)).
*concert performances for parents are Tuesday and Wednesday, also at 1:00 (you can come to the dress rehearsal if that is the only day you can make it but it will be longer as it is our opportunity to work out any kinks).  Students should also wear/bring pajamas for these performances.  They can also wear a Christmas hat they can dance in (optional).

Party Reminders
*our party will be Friday afternoon (Dec. 19th).  Thanks in advance to Novah (veggie plate), Zackary (cheese and crackers), Kendra (sweet treat) and Geena (popcorn or chips)
*please send a recess snack and lunch as usual as we will be eating our party snacks later in the day
*Friday is also our school wide read (everyone can bring a favourite Christmas book to share) and.....you guessed it!  PAJAMA DAY!!!!

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

December 5, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I hope your weekend is off to a good start.  It was great meeting with all of you this week to discuss your children's progress and set some goals for the upcoming term.  Thank you all for arriving on time and helping keep everything on schedule.  That was much appreciated.

**A big thank you to Jakob's family for donating some books to the class.  They are much appreciated and will be enjoyed.

**The details about the concert are in the previous post (please read if you have not already done so).  We would appreciate it if the children could wear their pajamas on the dress rehearsal date and the concert dates.  Students will be going outside for recess/lunch as usual so if you would prefer your child to change, please send a pair of easy on/off pants.  Thank you!

**Thank you to Karman's mom who brought in Timbits to celebrate the excitement of Karman's new twin cousins :)

**We will be having our class Christmas party the last day of school.  Next week I will post a reminder to those of you who signed up to bring snacks (I am doing this at home and don't have it with me).  Students will still need a lunch that day.

**If anyone has craft supplies such as buttons, pompoms, stickers etc. they would be much appreciated.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Amanda

Conferences/Concert

Hi Everyone,

I am looking forward to meeting with you all during conferences Wednesday and Thursday (see the two previous posts for specific information).  Please check the booking site to confirm your time and enter through the front of the school.  You will be spending the 15 minutes you signed up for and the following 15 minutes will be spent with your child and myself setting goals for the upcoming term.  Also, please note that dismissal time on Wednesday is 11:40 (not 11:30 as we were first instructed).  Thank you!

Christmas Concert

Our concert is fast approaching and the students have been working hard to learn their songs.  Our concert dates are Tuesday, December 16th at 1:00 and Wednesday, December 17th at 1:00.  Parents are welcome to come and see all of the performances one of those days.  We also have a dress rehearsal on Monday, December 15th at 1:00 which you can attend if you are unavailable the other days (although it will be longer and messy :)).  For the concert (and dress rehearsal) we would like the children to wear pajamas and Santa hats (or some other festive hat they can dance in).  If you have any questions please come and see me.

**Please note that hats should be sent on/before Monday, December 15th and should be clearly labeled with your child's name.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

November 21st

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to start off with a big 'THANKYOU' to our parent drivers!  We had a fantastic time at skating and we couldn't have done it with out you!  We are studying forces and motion right now and we definitely received confirmation that ice is slippery (has less friction) and hard (is a strong force to land on :)).  Nonetheless, a good time was had by all and if there is availability I would like to take the class a second time in the spring.

Reminders

The conferences are less than 2 weeks away.  If you have not already done so, please sign up for a meeting time using the link from our 'Useful Links' on this blog (it is also in last week's post).  You will be signing up for a 15 minute block but you will be here for 30 minutes.  That first 15 minutes (the time you sign up for) will be spent celebrating your child's work in the hall and the next 15 minutes will be spent collaboratively setting goals for the next part of the school year.

Here is a link you may be interested in viewing prior to the conferences:

http://schools.sd42.ca/sd42reporting/parent-information/

Next Friday, November 28th will be 'Hat Day'.  This is being led by our leadership group who are busy making posters/announcements to advertise the event.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Conference Sign up/Skating Reminders

https://amandaroberts.youcanbook.me/

Hi Everyone,

Please use the above link to sign up for your child's conference on December 3rd and 4th.  This will be a time where we meet to discuss your child's progress to date.  There will be an early dismissal on December 3rd (11:30) and there is no school for students on December 4th.  That is because your child will attend the conference with you and be part of the goal setting concerning his/her learning.  Please note that I will not be sending reminders regarding the time you book as the site will be available for you to check right up until the conference dates.  I look forward to meeting with all of you.  ***PLEASE NOTE THAT ALTHOUGH YOU ARE SIGNING UP FOR A 15 MINUTE SLOT, YOU WILL BE HERE FOR 30 MINUTES:  THE FIRST 15 MINUTES WILL BE SPENT CELEBRATING YOUR CHILD'S WORK WITH HIM/HER.  THEN WE WILL ALL MEET.  PLEASE ARRIVE AT THE START TIME YOU SIGNED UP FOR.  (Example:  If you sign up for 2:15 you will meet with your child from 2:15-2:30 and then we will meet from 2:30-2:45).  Please enter the building via the front door so that the meetings are not disturbed.  Thanks so much! :)

We are on for skating!  Thanks so much for all the parents (and grandparents) who have volunteered.  We will be skating for the afternoon and plan to return to the school by dismissal.  PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A BOOSTER SEAT.  Skates and helmets should be brought by those students who are not renting.  Warm clothing (snow pants, mittens, etc. are also recommended).  A reminder to parent drivers that you must have a volunteer form/driver's abstract on file in order to drive other children (you can still drive your own child, of course).  The abstracts expire after 2 years so even if you previously completed one it may no longer be valid.  These are quick and easy to do as it just takes a phone call and ICBC will fax the form directly to the school.  The number to call (and fax number for the school) are on the back of the form I sent home with your child (it is at the very bottom).  Please phone/see me first thing Monday morning if any problems arise.  We hope to leave the school by 12:45 in order to maximize our time on the ice.  Thanks so much, Amanda Roberts

Thursday 6 November 2014

November 6, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all enjoy the four day weekend coming up (Monday is a holiday due to the altered calendar that was implemented a few years ago) and Tuesday is, of course, Remembrance Day.

Reminders

We will be collecting money tomorrow which will be passed on to the veterans.  All students will receive a poppy even if a donation isn't made but all funds are appreciated.

Students should all have inside shoes at this point.  Please send them in with your child if you have not already done so.

Family Reading is every Friday from 8:30-8:45.

Skating notices went home Wednesday and are due next Thursday.  Parent drivers are needed for this field trip so if you are available to drive your help is much appreciated.  You do not have to be able to skate to volunteer for this trip.  If you are able to volunteer please remember that you need to have a driver's abstract on file.  If I do not have enough drivers by Friday I will need to cancel the trip. Also, just a  reminder that this is a school outing and all students are expected to attend.  It is a great opportunity to build on a new school and make connections with other students in the school.

Other items...

One of our classmates has lost his book bag.  Can you please check your child's backpack in case it was mistakenly brought home?  Thanks so much! (A new set of books with a letter of explanation enclosed in the bag was sent home Wednesday)

If anyone has any gently used books they would like to donate to the class that would be fantastic.  Also, any old craft supplies that you are finished with can be added to our art center and would be enjoyed by the students.  Finally, any building toys, hotwheels, magnet sets etc. that your child may be finished with would be a welcome addition to our classroom.

**Hopefully you are all reading this Thursday night as students wrote 'Please see Blog' in their planners but if you happen to have missed it, please note that this is how I will let you know if there is time sensitive information to share with you.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

October 31

Happy Halloween Everyone!

We have had an action packed week in Division 6 and we will be ending the week with our class party this afternoon.  A big thank you to everyone who sent snacks to share (Karman, Dharma, Novah Jacob, Criss, Priya, Jaxon and Jordyn).  Your contribution is much appreciated and will be enjoyed later today.

Reminders

*Book Fair is now set up in the library! (If you would like to have your child purchase books you can send money to school with him/her)
*A skating notice will be coming home next week so please remember to check the front pouch of your child's planner.  Thank you!
*Please send inside shoes for your child if you have not already done so.
*We will be adding to our book bags next week.  Students will have the books for 2-3 weeks and should practice nightly.  They will continue to bring home a new book each night (one that they choose).

Have a wonderful time trick or treating tonight!

Mrs. Roberts

October 24 Update

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying the day off today.  Luckily the rain seems to be holding off so far.

Comfort Kits

Some of you will have received your child's comfort kits from last year.  These were sent home so that you can update the information and change out any snacks that have passed their due date.  If you need a new information sheet, Mrs. Kirves has put them on the parent portal so that you can print one off from there.  Just a reminder to everyone that each child should have a comfort kit at school in case of an emergency.

Supplies

Most students have all of their supplies now but some are still outstanding.  I will be giving these students a checklist this week so they can check off what is missing and bring it home as a reminder.  Also, please send in a pair of inside shoes for your children if you have not already done so.  This helps to keep our school clean and safe (floors aren't wet and therefore less slippery.

Save the Date

After Halloween your child will be bringing home a permission slip to go skating on the afternoon of Monday, November 17th .  We will need drivers and volunteers to help with this field trip.  If you do not skate please feel welcome to join us anyway, we can also use the extra help getting skates on everyone!  Please also note that you must have a driver's abstract/volunteer form on file in the office in order to drive.  This is a very simple process and no longer requires a trip to the DMV as they will fax a copy of your driving record to Fairview.  Also, please remember that you need to provide a booster seat for your child as we have a very limited supply at the school.

Halloween Party

This week we will be having our Halloween party!  Thanks in advance to these students and their families for sending snacks:  Karman (veggie plate), Dharma (cheese/crackers or sandwich quarters), Jacob (sweet treat), Jaxon, (popcorn, chips or pretzels)  and Jordyn (sweet treat).

Please note that students are welcome to wear their costumes but should be prepared to go outside at recess and lunch.  I recommend that students wear their costume over a set of clothes so they can easily slide them off to go out and play. Thanks so much!

October 17, 2014

Hi Everyone,

Division 6 has made great progress this past week and are now understanding/following the class routines.  Well done, everyone!

Reminders

**Your children may have told you that we are creating an artistic spider web using pastels and water coloured paints.  If you have not already done so, please send pastels and a paint set in as we plan on using these throughout the year.

**Please send in planner and memory book money if you have not already done so ($7.50 and $5.00).  You also have the option of paying for the planner on the portal if you wish.   https://parents.sd42.ca/

**We have family reading each Friday morning from 8:30-8:45.  Please come and join us if you are available! (younger siblings are also welcome)

**If you haven't already signed up to send snacks for one of our class parties this year, please come by and do this next week.  If you are unable to come to the school, please write a note in your child's planner letting me know which party you would like to send food for (the options are Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and End of School).  If I don't hear from you then I will slot you into one of the available spaces.  You only need to send treats to one party and I will send you a reminder beforehand.

**Entertainment books are due (you can send in the money or the book itself).  Let's be the first class to hand everything in! :)

Routines

**Your child will be bringing home his/her 'Poetry and More' duotang today.  Please read the poems/songs with your child over the weekend and return the book on Monday.

**Some of your children will also have brought home a book bag (the rest will receive their book once their group has read with me, everyone will have one by midweek).  At this point it has just one book inside which will be the one they will be presenting to the class with their group so extra practice at home will help increase their confidence.  In the upcoming weeks more books will be added to this bag which will be used in class and at home for extra practice.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

We have had a busy weekend in Division 6.  Our class was responsible for promoting the food hamper donations and once again our food drive was a big success!  We also participated in the Terry Fox Run and helped raise money for another great cause.  Thank you everyone for supporting our efforts and a big thank you to the parents who came out and ran with us today.

On Thursday your children brought home an autumn tree to enjoy over the holidays.  Please ask your son or daughter to tell you about the story 'The Giving Tree' which we labeled the tree as a reminder to give to others.

Also, your child should have a 'Poetry and More' duotang in their back pack.  There is an outline (on the first page) of how this will be used this year.  Please return them to school each Monday.

A few reminders...

If you have not already done so, please send in:

*inside shoes (these will help keep our school clean and the gym safe)
*any missing supplies (felts, paints, pastels, scissors, pencil boxes etc.)
(If you need a new list please let me know and I will send one home)
*planner and/or memory book money ($7.50 for planners, $5.00 for memory books)
*Student Identification forms (it is important for the office to receive this ASAP)

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

October 4, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying your weekend!

We are off to a good start in Division 6.  We are working on building a classroom community and many new friendships are already developing.  We are also learning classroom routines and responsibilities and the day to day improvements in these areas are fantastic.  Keep up the great work, everyone!

Supplies

The majority of supplies have been brought in but some of the 'specialty' items are still outstanding at this point, particularly the water colour paint set, pastels and the USB stick.  I have some art lessons planned that will require the first two items soon and the USB stick will be needed in the upcoming weeks as we begin to publish some of our writing.

Terry Fox Run

We are running our annual 'Terry Fox Run' this upcoming Friday. For your child to participate on the course you will need to give permission for 'Walking Fieldtrips' via the parent portal.  If your child has not been registered via the portal (or a paper copy which I can send home if you write a note in your child's planner requesting one) then he/she will participate on the school grounds by walking around the fields. The run will be happening rain or shine and you are welcome to join us.  Parent volunteers are also needed so if you are able to do this, please let me know.  Thank you!

Food Bank

I also want to let you know that Division 6 has taken on the very important job of collecting food for the Friends in Need Foodbank.  We have already made reminder posters and delivered boxes and this week we will be making daily announcements over the school PA system.  The boxes will be picked up this Friday and will be distributed to people in need.  We hope that this helps everyone have something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

I do want to remind everyone that I do not check the email that corresponds to this Blog.  If you have any feedback, questions or comments please feel free to contact me via my work email:  Amanda_Roberts@sd42.ca

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Amanda Roberts

June 11, 2014

Hi Everyone,

Times are a bit uncertain as you all know right now.  I have told the students that we will continue to learn and enjoy our time together as though our year will end at the usual time but there are some preparations I am making just in case.  First of all, I am sending home supplies that we will not be using this year so that you can store them away for upcoming school years.  Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani and I were not teaching grade 2/3 at the time the supply list was made so we received a lot of extra supplies that weren't needed for our year.  I am sending them over a couple of days so that back packs aren't too heavy.  I will hold on to supplies we use daily in hopes that our year will continue as planned.

I will ask again that you check your home for any class books or library books and send them in on Friday.  Mrs. Kirves is asking that all library books be returned next week so that inventory may be done.  If your child has lost any library books over the year a bill will be sent home.

I have also asked the students to return their 'Just Right Reading' book bags by Friday.  Again, these need to be returned to our primary book room so missing books can be reordered in preparation for next year.

Could each student please bring a sturdy bag with their name on it so to keep on their hooks for when the school year does end and the remainder of the school supplies will be sent home.

Also, there was an announcement today that this Friday there will be a popcorn sale at lunch time.  If anyone is interested in ordering they can bring a twoonie to school that day.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Happy Friday Everyone!

I have added a new link to the class blog called 'Earth Rangers'.  It is a club the students can join if they wish but there are also many free activities they can do with out joining or committing to fundraising. We will be checking it out in the lab today.

Everyone received a class calendar for June earlier this week.  If your child's did not make it home please let me know via his/her planner and I will send home a second copy.  Our class party is slated for the afternoon of Tuesday, June 24th.  Thanks in advance to these students and their families for bringing snacks:  Fruit plate (Adrien), Cheese/Crackers (Daniel), Popcorn/Chips or Pretzels (Lachlan), Veggies (Manvir), Sweet Treat (Manvir) and Other (Savannah).

You may have noticed that your children have new books in their JRR bags.  This will be the last set being sent home this year.  Please ensure that your child brings their bag to school daily so they can read the books/return them when they are finished.  Also, many of the class books tend to disappear over the year so if you could please check your homes for any borrowed books and return them that would be much appreciated.  Finally, if anyone has any gently books that you would like to donate to our class, they are always welcome.  A big thank you to the Kynsoon family for their recent donation.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

Friday 23 May 2014

May 23, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Here are a few updates/reminders:

Our poetry recital is next Friday.  Please encourage your child to practice his/her poem as we hope that everyone will be able to recite the poem by memory.  Grade 3's will be doing this independently and grade 2's will be working in partners but would also benefit from practicing on their own at home.  The recital will be from 10:45-approximately 12:00.

Our spelling program is complete but we would like to continue our weekly spelling quizzes with a focus on 'Frequently Misspelled' words.  Your child will be introduced to 8 new words each week.  These words will not have a pattern and will be more challenging to learn which is why we are reducing the number of words.  The quiz will continue to be 5 words from the list.

Thank you to those of you who were able to come by and enjoy the 'Gallery Walk' today.  If you were unable to make it you can still enjoy the art at a later time as it will be left up for awhile.  Please check in at the office if you come by to see it during school hours.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Friday 16 May 2014

May 16, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend!

Updates/Reminders

Our May assembly has been rescheduled and will now be on May 29 at 8:45.  Students who are in choir will be performing that day and a notice from Mrs. Godfrey with details of this was sent home earlier this week.

Parents are invited to attend the Gallery Walk any time throughout the day on Friday, May 23rd.  Our class will be viewing the art with our big buddies from 9:40-10:00 but the doors will be open to parents through out the school day.  For security reasons we ask that everyone enter through the front door where parent volunteers will sign you in and hand out a sticker for you to wear.  Thanks so much for your cooperation with this.  The art will remain up after the Gallery Walk so if you are unable to attend you could still see the work at a later date.

***** Art for the Gallery Walk is due by Wednesday, May 21 so that we can write our Artist Statements and mount our work.  If your child does not bring in a piece of art by this time they will select a piece that is already at the school.****

Just a reminder to please provide both inside and outside shoes appropriate for running each day.  If your child prefers to wear sandals then please place some socks/runners in his/her backpack so they can change for those active times.

Thanks so much!

Amanda Roberts

May 9th, 2014

Happy Mother's Day! (on Sunday :)),

I hope you all enjoy the gift your children have been busy working on.  They are very proud of them and did a great job.

A big thank you to all of our parent drivers.  We really appreciate you taking us to the theater yesterday.  Everyone enjoyed the play and it was fun to see Tessa (and our big buddies Elise and Kianna) performing on the stage. They all did a terrific job!

Here are some additional items to add to the May calendar that I sent home.

*May 16th:  Memory Book Covers are due for those interested in being in the contest

*May 23rd:  Fairview's Gallery Walk (Time TBA) Each student in the school will provide a piece of art for this.  It may be a sculpture, painting, drawing etc.  Some students may choose to select a piece of art they made at school (I have some here) while others may like to create their own item to bring in (or bring back something they made at school but have at home now).  It is entirely up to you and your child.  I would ask that all art pieces be at the school by MONDAY, MAY 19TH as this will allow time to complete an 'Artist's Statement' to accompany the piece.  Thanks so much for your assistance with this.

*May 30th:  Primary Poetry Recital 10:45-12:00 (Grade 2 students will memorize/present in pairs.  Grade 3 students will present independently.  It may be a poem they write themselves or one they choose.  They are welcome to do this at home this weekend and bring it to school on Monday.  I will have some books available on Monday for students who have not yet selected a poem.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

Friday 2 May 2014

May 2, 2014 Update

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying the sunshine, unfortunately the forecast is not good for the weekend :(

*please remember to ensure sunscreen/hats are worn to school on sunny days as we would like to get outside and enjoy the great weather when we can
*we are still short drivers for Thursday's field trip.  Please return the notice I sent home if you are able to drive (or you can write a note including how many seatbelts you have available.)  Driver's abstracts must be on file before students can drive in your car but if you are unable to do this it would still be helpful if you can drive your own child.  You do not need to attend the play as I already have two volunteers to do this, it is strictly transportation that we are looking for at this time.  Thanks so much!
*The Jumprope for Heart prizes have now arrived and if there are any parents who are available to organize/distribute prizes next week that would be much appreciated.  Please see me or write a note in your child's planner regarding your availability so I can coordinate volunteers.  Thank you!
*I am sending home a 'May' calendar today that includes important dates for this month.  It is hard to believe that it is May already!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

Friday 25 April 2014

April 25, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I hope you enjoy a fabulous weekend.  Here are a few reminders/requests:

1) Please return the driver's volunteer form if you are able to come to the ACT theater.  You do not need to attend the play but at this point we only have spaces for 5 children.  A couple of our regular volunteers are busy with the play itself so if anyone is able to help out that would be much appreciated.

2) Easter Art that came home last week needs to be returned so that it can be added to our Memory Books.

3) Children who are in cross country and are racing on Monday should come to school in clothing ready for the race, it is on rain or shine.

4) Please see our 'Useful Links' for a list of websites that are kid friendly, fun and great for reinforcing skills in all areas of the curriculum.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

April 11, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I hope you enjoy the upcoming weekend, it is supposed to be a nice sunny one!

This week each of you should have received an April calendar and a 'Scientist of the Day' package.  Many of you may have assisted your child during 'Scientist of the Day' when they were younger as it is a great way to expose children to science so many of us include it in our classroom practice.  The expectation for this assignment is that the student's draw/label a detailed diagram and that they include an explanation of the results in their own words.  You may, of course assist them in choosing/practicing their experiment and offer support by prompting with questions but the rest should be done independently.  Thanks so much for your support in this.

Also, just  a reminder that May 8th will be our field trip to the ACT theater.  Everyone has given permission and paid so I will be sending a note home soon asking for drivers.  If you are able to help the class out with this, that would be wonderful.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Homework :)

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a terrific Spring Break.

Your child has some homework to complete this weekend.  We have been working on developing descriptive vocabulary so the assignment is on adjectives.  You are welcome to give your child assistance with this homework (spelling, prompting them to find more powerful words).  We will be sharing our completed stories on Monday.

Also, next week I will be sending home the student's math duotangs (we will be starting a new duotang).  I have discussed with each of you individually if your child is having any challenges in math but I would suggest that all students would benefit from completing any unfinished work (it may be incomplete due to speed of work, absences, level of difficulty for the student etc.).  Some of the sheets are from stations/games where time is limited, it will be the numbered pages that are in packages that should be the focus.  This work can be checked by you or sent to school for me to mark.

Have a great weekend!

Conference Sign Up (Tuesday, March 11)

https://mrsajroberts.youcanbook.me/

Hi Everyone,

I have now set up for conference times on Tuesday, March 11th.  This is my first time attempting to do this online so please be patient if any problems arise.  I will not be sending you a confirmation of your time as you can access it any time if you need a reminder.  I will only contact parents who have NOT signed up.  You can choose a time by doing the following: copy and paste the URL above or you can click on 'Conference Sign Up' in the 'Useful Links' portion of this website.

Please note that the conference date to sign up for is Tuesday, March 11th-this is important as the schedule shows all of the Tuesdays as being available.  Also, the conference time that you have set up for is a 15 minute slot but the ACTUAL CONFERENCES ARE 30 MINUTES:  THIS FIRST 15 MINUTES THAT YOU SIGNED UP FOR WILL BE SPENT VIEWING PORTFOLIOS WITH YOUR CHILD, THE FOLLOWING 15 MINUTES WILL BE SPENT WITH ME CREATING GOALS FOR TERM 3.    For example, if you sign up for 10:30, please arrive at that time to meet in the hallway and spend 15 minutes sharing your child's work with him/her.  Then, at 10:45 I will invite you and your child into the classroom for our three way conference.  If you could please enter via the front of the school that would be much appreciated.

I look forward to seeing all of you on March 11th!

***Please note that the gmail address used for this sign up/my blog are not checked regularly.  If you need to contact me, please continue to use my district email account Amanda_Roberts@sd42.ca.

Upcoming Events

Hi Everyone,

If you haven't been checking out our class Blog lately, you may want to peruse the previous entries as it is a busy time at Fairview right now!

Here are a few reminders:

Alien Invasion!

Dear Parents,

We are planning an alien invasion in our classroom.  The students have created the blueprint for their aliens and we are now ready to create!  It would be very helpful if you could send in some supplies to assist us with this (please don't purchase anything, it is just if you have this available in your home).  Some of the things we could use are:

Pipecleaners
Straws
Cottonballs
Toilet paper/Paper towel rolls
Beads
Styrofoam balls
Pompoms
Ribbon
Feathers
Q-tips
Milk caps
Cardstock
Tinfoil
Coloured plastic (cellophane)
Wire
Glitter
Stickers
Wood scraps
Bells
Felt
Material
Foam
Plastic Container Lids
Tissue Paper
Google Eyes
Yarn/Rope/String
Cardboard
Coloured Elastic Bands
Paper Plates
Plastic Cups

If you are sending supplies that are specifically for your child's project, please send it in a clearly labeled bag.  If supplies are not labeled they will be placed in a communal area.

Thanks so much for your help!

Firefighter Visit

Hello Parents,

The fire department came to visit today and the firefighters asked the students who knew their home address and phone number.  The majority of the class was unsure of this information.  I am sending home a fire safety plan for you to complete with your children and have asked everyone to review their address and phone number with you.

Thank you!

I mentioned in the previous Blog that I thought our Valentine's Day Party would be fun.  Well, it was....

February 14

Happy Valentine's Day, Everyone!

The class is in music with Mrs. Godfrey so I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a great day.  We will be having our class party after lunch and we are all very excited.  A big thank you to the families who provided snacks for our celebration.  They look delicious!

The upcoming week is also going to be a busy/fun one.  It will be pajama/bring a sports or olympic related book day on Wednesday (for club Red) and 100 Day on Thursday (we will be rotating through 100 related stations with the other primary classes).

**Reminder that your child should be reading every day and colouring that square on their Canada map  (please initial each square).

The students continue to ask excellent space related questions and (thanks to the internet) we have been able to find the answers.  They are now experts so you may want to ask them:  How does the space shuttle land?  Does it have a steering wheel?  Is their internet in space?

Also, your children have now been introduced to the site 'Spelling City'.  I will add our new list each week so that the students can practice while playing games.  For my stronger spellers you can help them prepare for the surprise bonus word by creating a list that follows the pattern together.  They may not guess the right word but this will provide a challenge and help build vocabulary/reinforce the concept of patterns in words.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

New Links

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to inform you that I have added some new links on our Blog:  Raz Kids (interactive reading website), ABCYa (great site for overall reinforcement of skills and is lots of fun) and Spelling City (for practice of weekly words).  To use the Spelling City website, enter as a student, click on 'Find a List' and type in Amanda Roberts.  If you scroll down you will find my name/school name.  Click on this and your child can play the games on the left side of the page (we only have the free membership at this time).

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

'Happy Family Day' weekend, everyone!  I hope you all enjoy spending the extra day together, we may even have some snow to play in!

Just a quick reminder that next week we will have a 'Dress up as your favourite character' day on Wednesday for our school wide 'Club Red'.  Also, we will have our Valentine's Day party on the 14th. A reminder to my volunteers who are sending snacks for the party, a list was sent home as part of our class calendar last week.  If anyone did not receive this calendar, please let me know as it contains several important dates and a class list for writing Valentine's Day cards.  Also, a reminder that your child still needs to bring a lunch on Valentine's Day.  The party will be in the afternoon and we may not be eating until around 1:00.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Feb. 2, 2014

Hi Everyone!

I would like to start off with a big thank you to the parent volunteers who joined us on Friday.  Our Space Center field trip was a huge success.

Please note...

I will be sending home a 'February' calendar with everyone tomorrow so that you can post it on your fridge :)  It will be a very busy (and fun) month.  There is a class list on the reverse side of the calendar to ensure that everyone is included when your child is writing his/her Valentine's Day cards.  I have also added a reminder for volunteers who have signed up to bring snacks for our Valentine's Day Party on February 14th.  Other noteworthy dates are the Scholastic due date, Family Day, 100 Day and the weekly Club Red activities.

Club Red

Last week your child brought home a 'Club Red' notice and calendar.  Please ensure that your child reads every day and that you initial the box after your child has read.  We will be having a celebration at the beginning of March and all coloured/initialed calendars will be handed in/posted in the gym.

Also, if anyone has red ribbon they would like to donate to the school, that would be much appreciated.  We will be using it as part of our Club Red Celebration.  Also, if anyone would like to volunteer to prepare for that event, that would be much appreciated.

Please feel free to come and see me or write a note in your child's planner if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Field trip

Hi Everyone,

Your children have already put these reminders in your planners but just in case...

*please bring your child to school for 8:15: we plan to pull out by 8:30 at the latest
*send a disposable lunch in a bag marked with their names
*have your child put a small snack in his or her pocket

A big thank you to Mrs. Bockman, Mrs. Dulay, Mr. Vamplew, Mrs. Amadeo and Mrs. Walker for volunteering tomorrow.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

I am looking forward to a great day.  See you in the morning,

Mrs. Roberts (see note below)

****Two students aren't registered for the field trip.  If you have not paid online you will need to sign a paper permission slip before we leave!!!!  There is a glitch in the system that will not acknowledge permission online unless a credit card is used.  Please go to the office before 8:15 to take care of this. Thank you!

Parent Volunteers for Fieldtrip

Hello Everyone,

As you all know, the district has now set up a 'Parent Portal' that we need to use for school field trips.  If you have not already done so, please register for the portal and complete the online registration form for the Space Center Field trip.  We cannot take your child with out this permission.  Thank you!

Also, at this time it appears that we have no volunteers for the field trip (for either Div. 6 and 7).  We are guessing that some of you may have selected 'yes' for volunteering but that we cannot view this.  If this is the case, could you please jot a note in your child's planner or see me in person so that I am aware of your interest in volunteering?

Thanks so much,

Amanda Roberts

***Another copy of the portal sign up information/numbers will go home with your child tomorrow if you haven't registered yet***

A Great Youtube Video

Hi Everyone,

Here is a great video we watched today.  It really gives insight into how large space (and the different bodies in it) are.  The students really wanted to share it with all of you.

Enjoy!

January 18th

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all having a great weekend!

We had a great start to our 'Space' theme this week!  The students are definitely interested in this unit and have so many questions!  A big thank you to Sam (and the Vamplew family) for sharing some of your space books and donating some wall stickers to the class.  We will enjoy using them next week.

Reminders...

*if you have not already done so, please register/fill out the permission form for our Space Center field trip (via the district parent portal).  Notices for this were sent out at the beginning of the school year and a reminder letter was sent out last month with the number you need to register (the form was purple).  If anyone has misplace theirs, please let me know and I will ask our secretary to print another copy.  Thank you!

*students should be reading nightly, using their book bags.  If your child received a chapter book for their 'Reader's Workshop' book this round they should focus on this one first

Have a great weekend, everyone!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION...

Hello Everyone,

Those of you who have already signed up on the 'Parent Portal' will have received an email asking you to register/pay for our upcoming fieldtrip to the McMillan Space Center.  Thank you to those of you who have already done this.

If you have not already registered, please do so and then follow the steps to register your child for the trip.  District 42  is encouraging everyone to sign up as all field trips, payments etc. will now be dealt with through this site.  This is a new system for us also so that I ask for your patience as we work through the challenges of using this.

Please see me if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I hope you all had a terrific holiday.  I certainly enjoyed spending lots of time with my family over the winter break.

We have started this term focusing on winter/goal setting (connected to resolutions) and will move onto our unit on Space next week.  The students' are very excited about this theme and are already posing a lot of tough questions!  We will seek to find the answers together during the upcoming weeks.

In math we are extending our understanding of place value into the thousands and will begin adding/subtracting these numbers.  We will focus on numbers that require regrouping/borrowing soon as well.  We are also focusing on geometry during 'Explorations'.

In writing, we are focusing on developing our editing skills. To support this, we are beginning a spelling program next week.  This program will focus on looking for patterns in words and then transition into learning/memorizing those challenging English words that don't follow a pattern and that are often misspelled.  Please check your child's planner pocket early next week for a more detailed explanation.

In reading, we continue to focus on developing skills/confidence via our 'Reader's Workshop'.  We have some exciting space-related activities coming up next week which we hope will inspire everyone.

Information/Reminders:

*we will continue to welcome everyone Friday mornings from 8:30-8:45 for Family Reading
*memory book money ($6) is still outstanding for quite a few individuals.  I will be sending home a reminder note for those who have not sent it in by the end of the week.  Thank you.
*a calendar of January events went home this week, if you did not receive one, please let me know via your child's planner.  Noteworthy days include 'Popcorn Day' (15th and 16th), ProD Day (24th) and MacMillan Space Center Fieldtrip (31st-the permission slip will be sent home next week).

Have a great weekend, everyone,

Amanda Roberts
