January 31/19

Hi Parents.

We have just arrived home from our field trip at Science World.  We had a great day and everyone left the bus with a smile on their face (even the parents :))

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*A big thank you to our volunteer parents for coming on our field trip today.  We really appreciate the parent support so that we can enjoy outings like this.  It was a fun and educational day!

*Everyone brought home a 'Club Red' calendar/information sheet yesterday.  It is in the front pouch of your child's planner.  The program starts tomorrow and begins with a bring your favourite book/and wear your PJ's to school day! :)  Please post the calendar on the fridge and initial and have your child colour each square after 15 minutes of home reading every day.

*Grandparents day will be coming soon...on February 26th Grandparents will be welcome to join us for some afternoon activities (save the date...more information will be coming from Mrs. Watkins soon)  It happens on the 100th day of school so we will be combining celebrations this year.

*Please see the monthly calendar on this blog for important dates coming up in February, it is going to be a fun (and busy) month.

*Our Valentine's Day party will be on Wednesday, February 13th.  Thank you in advance to the following people for sending in treats that day:  Fruit plate (Antonio), Veggie Plate (Eleana) Cheese/crackers (Mannat),  Sweet Treat (Isabella) and Popcorn or Chips (Sophia).  Students will still need to bring a snack and lunch on that day as we eat late in the dat.  Here is a list of student names so that everyone can begin writing Valentines:

Pandora  Josh  Lucas  Antonio  Max  Paityn  Sophia  Cash  Eleana  Eugene  Ryanna  Declan
Mannat  Dyllan  Logan  Isabella  Keana  Riana

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few updates/reminders and some pictures of our owl pellet dissection.  Everyone in the class was very focused and loved finding all of the bones, especially the skulls!  We were able to use our charts to try to identify which animals our owls may have eaten.  Thank you to everyone for sending in the tweezers.  We used these, along with rubber gloves and magnifying glasses to work like real scientists.

*We go out for 'Forest Fun' every Tuesday, rain or shine.  Please ensure that your child is dressed for this, they should be prepared to be outside every day at recess/lunch as our district does have a 'West Coast Recess' policy

*Our field trip is coming up next week!  I will be sending home an email tomorrow with details on which parents will be attending for free and how many we can include on the bus.

*This Friday is a 'Curriculum Day' for teachers.  Students do not attend school.

*Fairview will be having our first 'Family Fun Movie Night'.  Here is the information from the grade 7  host teachers, Mrs. Davidson and Mrs. Acaster.  Tickets do need to be purchased in advance.  It is a family movie night but if you are unable to attend, there will be adults available to supervise students, please check in with Mrs. Davidson or Acaster if this is the case.

When: January 31st, 2019
Where: Fairview Gym
What time: 5:45pm-730pm
What Movie: Daddy Day Care
How much: $2/ ticket
There will be popcorn and candy bags sold.
All ages are welcome.

I hope you can make it!

January 16/18

Hi Everyone,

I am sending out this post a little early this week with a couple of reminders.  We are presently wrapping up our owl unit and are about to move onto the body/nutrition.  If anyone works in the medical field and would like to come in and talk to us about anything related to our upcoming theme, please let me know and we will set up a time.  Thank you!

*If you are able to, please send in some tweezers in a labeled bag for our owl pellet dissection which will be happening tomorrow

*A big thank you to everyone who sent in food for our party last week, our new years party was a big success!  Also, a big thank you for the extra noisemakers...we had a blast with them :)

*A parent has let me know that you had to sign up as a driver for the field trip to Science World, even though we are taking the bus.  If you have signed up 'to drive' I will assume that means you want to come as a volunteer on the bus.  If this is incorrect, please email me at amanda_roberts@sd42.ca

*It is 'Decades Day' at Fairview on Friday for anyone who would like to participate (dress up as someone from any previous decade)

*New book bag books will be coming home today.  Please ensure that your child brings these to school daily.  They should be reading these (or other materials) each night for 10-15 minutes

*I will be sending home the spelling duotangs today.  Please take a look/help your child with corrections or to complete their work and return them tomorrow.  Duotangs can come home again tomorrow night if you are busy this evening.  I normally will only send the spelling home on Wednesday if your child needs to finish their work.  Please note:  there is a letter to parents at the front of the spelling duotang

*Just a reminder that I am now coaching on Tuesdays/Thursdays after school.  If you child is not picked up at 2:20 I will send them to the office when I leave for the practices/games so that they have an adult nearby.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

January 9/18

Happy New Year, Everyone!

This will be a brief post as I sent a lot of the information you need to know on an email earlier this week.

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*Friday we will have our class party.  Students can wear Pj's that day and need to bring a mug for hot chocolate (provided by our PAC).  They can also bring a noisemaker for our New Year's Eve count down if they like.

*reminder that your children all received a coupon for a free Scholastic book for up to $6 for their Christmas present from me this year.  Please order online this month or wait for a future order if there isn't anything that appeals to your child.  They have until June to use it.  Thank you!

*Some students needed a little more time to finish their book bag books so I have told them I will trade them out early next week.  Please ensure that your child's book bag is in his/her back pack on Monday so that I can collect them.  Thank you!

*You will be receiving a portal announcement regarding our upcoming field trip to Science World where we will be learning about the human body and watching an Omnimax film about Pandas.  A big thank you to the PAC for augmenting the cost of the bus to make it a more affordable outing.  This will be our big field trip of the year, we decided to do it earlier as it supports the unit we will be focusing on and it is often difficult to get bus transportation in June.

*I am now coaching basketball on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.  If you are unable to pick up your child at 2:20 on those days I will be asking them to wait at the office so that there is an adult nearby if they need assistance.  Thank you!

*I have added January dates to the 'Monthly Calendar'

*We will be starting our spelling program next week.  Students will be writing their words in their planners on Mondays.  They will do activities with these words throughout the week to develop their vocabulary and learn about patterns (and exceptions...there are lots of those) in the English language. Please do not be concerned if the words are too easy for your child.  There will be the opportunity to try some challenging 'bonus' words that use the same pattern and we will also be expanding the words through our activities.  You can even challenge your child at home by coming up with some more difficult words to 'test' them on.  We will work on our spelling activities during school Monday-Wednesday and then anything that is not complete will be sent home for homework on Wednesday nights.  We will have a small quiz (5 words plus 2 bonus words) on Fridays.  Thank you in advance for your help with this program.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!
