Great Work, Div. 6!

Congratulations on your third place finish in the cotton ball bulletin board contest and more importantly congratulations on all of the great work you did raising money and collecting toys for children in need.  Remember to take a moment on Christmas morning to think of all of the children whose day you made a little brighter.  You should all be very proud of yourselves :)

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Sunday 15 December 2013

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are having a fantastic weekend!

A couple of reminders about our upcoming week...

1) We will have a dress rehearsal (in front of the Fairview students) on Tuesday.  The children are welcome to wear pajamas and Santa hats that day (and on Wednesday and Thursday for the concert).  The dress rehearsal is after recess so it is probably best to wear pajamas to school that day and then students can wear or bring them for the afternoon performances on Wednesday and Thursday.  I hope everyone can make it.  Everyone has been working really hard on both their dance (led by Mrs. Lukacs) and their song. ***Please refer to your child's calendar for specific times***

2) Friday is pajama day (I know, lots of PJ time this week, sorry about the laundry) and our class party.  Thanks in advance for providing snacks:

Veggie Plate:  Callie
Cheese/Crackers:  Logan
Sweet Treat:  Giah
Popcorn or Chips:  Amalia

**No one has signed up to bring fruit so if anyone would like to do this and hasn't signed up for another party, please let me know.  Thank you!

A big thank you to our parent drivers for volunteering to take the students skating last week.  We had a wonderful time.

Please feel free to contact me via your child's planner, my school email Amanda_Roberts@sd42.ca or in person if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

December 7, 2013

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend and caught a glimpse of the mountains today...spectacular!  Here are a few updates and requests:

*we now have enough parent drivers for skating so the fieldtrip is on, please remember to send booster seats with your child that day and skates, helmets etc. if you are not renting

*I am still looking for more medium pine cones if anyone has any they would like to donate to the class

*our class party will be on the last day of school, I will add another post next week reminding those of you who signed up to bring snacks, thanks in advance to those volunteers

*in the new year we will begin studying space, if anyone has any puzzles, models, books, games, figures, posteres etc. that they would like to donate to the class that would be greatly appreciated

*everyone should have received a December calendar of class events by now, please keep this handy as it is a busy month

*the students will be wearing pajamas for the Christmas concerts;  I would like to give a big thank you to Miss Lukacs who has been teaching the students a holiday dance, we have been having a great time learning this :)

*all donations to the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Hamper Society are welcome until December 10th, please remember that both new toys and money donations are welcome (our class have been doing a great job reminding the other students about this important charity event via posters and announcements)

Enjoy the remainder of the weekend everyone and I will look forward to seeing you all on Monday,

Amanda Roberts

December 2, 2013

Hi Everyone,

I apologize that this posting is a little later than usual but I have been busy preparing for our upcoming conferences.  Thank you to everyone for signing up for a time to meet this Thursday.  I will be sending home reminders of your time tomorrow.  They will be taped inside your child's planner to ensure that they get to you.

We had a fantastic time dissecting our owl pellets last week.  I hope your children took some time to tell you all about it.  I was so impressed with the way they just dove right in and how inquisitive they were about locating all of the bones and discovering which animals they came from.  These will be on display during the conferences so you can take a look and discuss these with your children at that time. (see photos below of the children 'in action'-we have some real scientists in the making!)

Reminders/Information

*your child is to attend the conference with you on Thursday but there is no school for students that day
*skating notices are due this by Wednesday, we presently only have drivers for 2 students.  If I do not have enough drivers by Friday I will, unfortunately have to cancel the field trip.  I know this is a busy time for everyone but hopefully we will be able to make this work.
*students will be asked to wear their pajamas for the Christmas concerts, they are also welcome to wear Santa hats but they should fit snugly so they don't fall off during our amazing dance moves (a big thank you to Miss Lukacs for choreographing/teaching our class on her own time-you will love the performance!)
*our class is taking a leadership role in collecting toys/money for the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Hamper Society.  All donations are due in by December 10th.  Thanks so much for your support!

I will look forward to meeting with all of you on Thursday!  Thank you, Amanda Roberts
This is 'Pokey'.  He is a barred owl and everyone loved him!  Our class owl puppet has been named after him :)

Sharing our discoveries with our big buddies.  This time the little buddies get to be the teachers!

November 23, 2013

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you are all having a wonderful weekend, enjoying the sunshine!  I will be sending home a December calendar at the beginning of the month but wanted to give you a heads up that I have booked a skating outing for our class on Thursday, December 12th (skating from 1-2).  We will need parent drivers for this field trip so if you could please 'save the date' for this it would be much appreciated.  A permission slip will be coming home this week.

I also wanted to let you know that my class is going to be responsible, once again, for managing the toy drive for the Christmas Hamper.  A notice will be coming home on Monday regarding this but I just wanted to let you know that your children are going to be taking on a very important role in helping other children in our community have a great Christmas.  I hope that by doing this the students will feel a sense of empowerment that even at their age they can make a positive difference in someone's life.

I also wanted to remind you that the three way conference sheet is posted outside the hallway door.  Please sign up for a time if you have not already done so.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Conference Sign Up Sheet

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that the conference sign up sheet is now posted outside our classroom door in the hallway.  Each conference will be 30 minutes long.  The first 15 minutes will be you looking at your child's work with him/her in the hallway.  The second 15 minutes will be you, your child and the teacher(s) meeting in the classroom.  Please enter the school via the front door that day so that the conferences are not interrupted.

Thanks so much,

Amanda Roberts

Conferencing

Hi Everyone,

This is just an additional reminder that December 5th is an allocated day for three way conferencing.  I will be posting a schedule for you to select a time soon.  Please note that your child will also be a part of the conference and student goals will be set collaboratively (with input from the teacher, parents and student).  Please watch this blog for further information.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

November 17

Thank you everyone for sending in your forms/payment by the deadline last week.  The tickets for the ACT theater have been booked.

We are presently wrapping up the main portion of our Canada Unit (but learning about our country will be ongoing).  We will now be focusing on learning about owls/flight.  We kicked this off last week with a fantastic presentation by OWL and even had the opportunity to see a live barred owl.  We are all looking forward to dissecting our owl pellets this week and will let you know what we find.

Please continue to refer to the November notice/calendar that I sent home previously and check here each week for updates.  There will be further information here regarding three way conferences soon.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are having a restful weekend after a busy week of Halloween fun.  We were busy in Division 6, creating Halloween crafts, playing Halloween math games and developing our creative writing skills.

I sent home the students Halloween paintings (for those who wanted to use them for a decoration over Halloween).  If you could please send them back to school, I will be adding these to the memory books the students will bring home at the end of the school year (a reminder if you haven't sent the $6 for this, please do so.  Thank you!)

We had our first music session on Friday with Liam's mom.  She came in and taught the students a couple of songs and reviewed some beginner notes.  We really appreciate her taking the time out of her day to come and do this.  Thanks so much!

A big thank you also goes to the students' families who sent snacks for the party.  They were enjoyed by all.

***Important Reminder:  We have a student in our class who has a life threatening peanut/nut allergy.  Many students are bringing Halloween treats to school.  Please ensure that they only bring 'nut free' snacks.  Thanks so much!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone and I will look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Now that I have most of the photo permission slips in, I will be adding photos to my weekly blog.  Please see 1) Our Halloween door 2) Students hard at work using their Halloween painting as the setting for their story 3) Hallway reading on pajama day 4) Sing a long with Mrs. Brekkaas

October 24, 2013

Hi Everyone,

A quick reminder that tomorrow is a Professional Day and students do not attend school.  I will look forward to seeing all of you on Monday.

I would like to say a big thank you to our parent drivers/volunteers for taking us to Fort Langley earlier this week.  The students really enjoyed themselves and had lots of stories to share when we returned.

Next week is, of course Halloween.  Students are welcome to wear their costumes to school but they should be easy to remove for playing outside at recess/lunch.  I will be sending home a notice early next week regarding the classroom party.  The day following Halloween (November 1) we will be having a pajama day and students are welcome to wear their pj's to school.

Please feel free to come by and see our classroom door.  It is decorated with beautiful pastel owls and creepy Halloween creatures.  The students are very proud of their work!

Have a great long weekend, everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend enjoying some family time and lots of turkey :)

The students have all brought home a turkey craft to enjoy over the weekend and they also completed a guided drawing and some writing about being thankful which will be added to their memory books.

We continue to enjoy our Canada unit and are becoming quite knowledgeable about our great country. We are going to be focusing on owls for our next unit which we plan to start in a couple of weeks.  I would like to complete a craft during that time which involves medium/large pinecones.  If anyone has any they would like to donate or knows of a good area to collect them, that would be much appreciated.

Thank you...

**to the Hill family for the book donation to our class (gently used books are always welcome for adding to our home reading books)
**to Division 6 for their great work during the food/clothing drive, making announcements, making signs and helping organize the boxes

Field trip Update:  More than half of the class has returned their Ft. Langley field trip notices but we only have drivers for 6 students.  If anyone else is available to drive that would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I want to send out a big thank you to our parent readers who came in today.  The students really enjoy this time and look forward to it each Friday morning.

I would also like to let you know that your children have been working hard to organize our 'Friends in Need' food and clothing drive.  This will be occurring next week and all donations are welcome.

Please note that this Thursday there is an early dismissal (11:40).  If you would like to arrange a meeting with me, please write a note in your child's planner of phone the school at 604 465-9331 to set up a time.  We can discuss your child's progress in person or over the phone.  Whatever is more convenient.  I will also be contacting some parents via the phone during this time.

Also a reminder to please check that your driver's abstracts are in if you plan on driving for our upcoming field trip in Langley.  Thank you in advance to all of our volunteers.

Division 6 Updates:

*the Terry Fox run was a big success and a good time was had by all (despite the rain).  Ask your children if Terry achieved his goal of raising $1 for every Canadian? A big congratulations to Brooklyn whose name was drawn for having the correct answer for 'Terry Fox Trivia'  Well done!
*please return office forms so that our secretary can update the school records
*please send in money for the planner ($8) and memory book ($6);  (please let me know if this causes financial hardship)
*Family reading will be occuring each Friday from 8:30-8:45;  everyone is welcome!
*The Ft. Langley field trip will now be on October 22, more information to follow

I am presently compiling supplies to create an 'Inventions' area in the classroom.  If anyone has any items you would like to donate to the class to support this, that would be wonderful.  Also, craft items, gently used books and educational toys are always welcome (these include building sets, animal figures, puppets etc).

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Hello Everyone,

A big thank you to parents for joining us for 'Family Reading' this morning.  The students really enjoy this time and it was nice to see siblings joining in as well (Piper even brought her own book!)

I wanted to remind everyone that Monday is a Professional Development Day and Tuesday is a School Growth Planning Day so there is no school for students on those days.

Also, Friday afternoon we will be having our annual Terry Fox Run.  If you are able to send in a Twoonie for Terry with your children we will make a donation on behalf of Fairview Elementary.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying a fantastic weekend!  I just wanted to send out a quick reminder that we have a busy week coming up and ask you to refer to the June calendar for specific times and dates.

Also, please remember to read with your child daily and sign the spaces in the 'Popsicle Reading' sheet so that he/she can trade it in for a real popsicle later this month.

Please send all library books back to the school by June 10th.  Mrs. Kirves will be busy doing inventory in the library and will send home overdue notices where necessary.  Also, please send any classroom books that your child may have borrowed throughout the year.  Thank you!

Finally, please send in field trip notice forms if you have not done so already.

I will look forward to seeing many of you at the volunteer tea!

Hi Everyone,

I can't believe that it is now June.  It has been such a pleasure teaching your children this year and I will enjoy spending my last month with them before we all break for summer holidays.

A notice/calendar will be coming home on Monday so I will keep this entry brief.

We had a great day on Friday with our 'Mind up' celebration.  Each student brought home a brochure outlining the day and I encourage you to spend some time reviewing the day with them.  Thank you all for sending in your donations to help bring clean water to people in developing countries.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Roberts

May 22

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had an outstanding weekend!

We are continuing to love our ocean theme in Division 8.  The students are very enthusiastic and are super excited to see our classroom transforming into an ocean paradise.  I had planned on moving onto an insect theme next week (we have a bug visit tomorrow as you know) but we still have so much we want to learn about the ocean that we have decided to focus on it a bit longer.

Thank you to everyone who sent in milk jugs.  We now have enough for 'Mind Up' day.

Just a reminder, if you are doing a spring clean up in your homes and you find any gently used toys or books that might be enjoyed by other children I am happy to accept them for the classroom, particularly lego people, building materials, dolls/clothes etc.

Thanks so much,

Mrs. Roberts

Friday 10 May 2013

May 10th

Congratulations to everyone in Division 8 for your outstanding job at the poetry recital today.  You all did an amazing job!  Not only did you present your poem really well, you were a polite audience when the other speakers were reciting their poems.  Jordan, Kaiden, Krystel, Jaden and Grace deserve a big congratulations for learning 3 long poems AND making up their own actions for the shark poem they chose.  Well done!

Next week a few students from our class will be entering the speed stacking competition at Westview.  Good luck to Jordan, Kaiden, Daniel, Sterling, Stephanie and Tessa!  We hope you have a great experience.  (A reminder to parents of these children to please submit permission slips if you have not already done so).  Thank you!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms and grandmas who make such a big difference in your children's lives.  They are lucky to have you!

Have a great weekend!

May 3, 2013

Hi Everyone,

We have had quite a busy and exciting week in Division 8.  Our class did an outstanding job of presenting during their musical theater performance on Wednesday.  Each and every one of you should be proud of the great job you did. Many of our class members also participated in the Primary Cross Country race the same day.  They worked very hard and everyone completed the one kilometer race with a smile on their faces.  Well done!  We are continuing to explore the ocean and have begun receiving our new Reader's Workshop books which should be practiced at home as they will be presented to the class.  Your child has also received new Just Right Reading books and should be reading these at home as well.  We have also begun our math unit on measurement and will begin a new round of stations next week.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

Friday 19 April 2013

April 19

Hi Everyone,

Just a few reminders regarding the upcoming week...

Monday is Earth Day.  Students can wear green (if they have it) and should come prepared to clean up part of the school grounds (rain or shine).  If you have any extra rubber gloves handy, please send them in with your child.

Thursday is an early dismissal day (11:40) and if any of you wish to meet me for a conference, please contact me at (604) 465-9331 or write a note in your child's planner.  Friday is a professional day so there is no school for students.

On May 1st the students will be presenting their musical theater songs/dances.  This is a school wide assembly and will begin at 12:45 in order to accommodate all of the performances before our primary runners need to leave for the cross country race.  We hope you can make it!

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Tuesday 2 April 2013

Welcome Back!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break.  The children came back full of exciting stories to share about their travels, visiting family and Easter egg hunts.

Everyone will be receiving a new calendar/newsletter tomorrow which will outline our coming month.  Please note that our pizza lunch is now planned for next Tuesday.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Monday 11 March 2013

Congratulations Division 8

Division 8 spent a lot of time reading in the month of February.  Well done!  We ended up being the grand prize winners of a pizza lunch for being the primary class who had the highest percentage of students that read every day and returned their forms signed/on time.  Our big buddy class (Mrs. Koshlay's) was the winner for the intermediate class.  We will be having our lunch the first Thursday after Spring Break.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the conferences over the next two evenings.  Please remember that the first 10 minutes will be spent with your child and then we will all meet together.  Also, please enter through the front of the school.

Thank you!
