December 26th, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday and that you are enjoying some family time this holiday season.  I just wanted to send out a thank you to everyone for your generosity.  I was certainly spoiled by you all and appreciate your gifts and kind thoughts.  I have been enjoying (and sharing) all of the treats and will have fun shopping with my gift cards.

Happy New Year!

December 11, 2015

Hi Everyone,

It was great catching up with all of you during our student led conferences.  I think that all of your children have a lot to be proud of this term.  I know this is a very busy time for everyone so I will keep this brief.

*Please see the calendar for details on this busy upcoming week, the students will be wearing their pajamas a lot so that will take the 'getting dressed' part of the day off the list!  Christmas hats are also welcome!
*We will have our class party on Friday.  Thank you to these parents for sending in treats:  Kevin (fruit plate), Novah (veggie plate), Taylor (cheese/crackers or small sandwiches), Cadence (sweet treat) and Jacob (popcorn, chips or pretzels)
*Please send in a favourite Christmas book with your child that day also.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone and Merry Christmas!

Amanda Roberts

December 4th, 2015

Hi Everyone,

It is hard to believe but December is actually here!  Everyone is excited about all of the wonderful activities that go along with Christmas.  I hope you all enjoy some fun family time this weekend.

Reminders/Information

******We are skating on Monday.  Please send a booster seat for your child (along with skates and helmet if they aren't renting).  Also, if you have not yet paid for rentals please send the cash with your child as I can no longer take online payments (the cheque has been made).  Thank you to all of the parents who agreed to drive, especially Jaxon's parents who are both driving and who made arrangements for another vehicle so that we didn't have to cancel.  We really appreciate everyones help.

Conferences are also next week (see monthly calendar for dismissal times).  If you have not already done so, please sign up for a conference.  It is mandatory that I meet with every parent and your child as it is part of the reporting process now.  If you are having any trouble with the 'You can book me' site or you need an alternate time, please contact me.

Please ensure that your child is practicing his/her concert songs each weekend.  We want everyone to feel confident on the big day, your help with this is much appreciated.

We didn't receive any pinecones so we will be making a different Christmas craft.  Your child is welcome to bring a Santa hat (or other Christmas hat) to school next week if they would like to wear it for the photo that will go on the craft.

***Please note that I have added some new information on the monthly calendar (regarding Dec. 18th)

Have a  great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

*students have brought home three songs/poems today.  Two are for our Christmas concert (see calendar for time/dates) and one is for a presentation our class is doing at the assembly this Thursday.  Please help your child practice these with a focus on the assembly poem as that is coming soon.

Information/Reminders

*our Fort Langley field trip is next Friday, if you have not already done so, please sign your child up on the parent portal.  We are still short drivers at this time.  Thank you to those of you who have already committed to driving.  Please ensure that you have a current driver's abstract on file, they are only valid for 2 years.
*please reread the field trip information prior to our outing on Friday.  We included some details specific to this event

*please send 'inside shoes' for your child if you have not already done so, especially with the change in weather, we need these to keep our school dry and safe

October 31, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I am sure you are all looking forward to Halloween tomorrow.  Hopefully the rain holds off!

Everyone really enjoyed the costume parade in the gym today.  It was a lot of fun to see everyone decked out in their Halloween gear.  We also had a great time at our class party today.  The big hit was 'The Hamster Dance!'  Thank you to Young Hoon, Tony, Stephanie, Myra, Max and Brianna's parents for providing the food today.  It was much appreciated!  Thank you also to Novah's mom for helping us finish up our ghosts earlier this week.

Announcement/Reminders

*The calendar is now updated to include November (on the monthly calendar section of this blog)  Please check it each week for any additions/changes.

Thursday 22 October 2015

October 22, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all enjoy the long weekend (Professional Development Day tomorrow).  We have been so fortunate to have such amazing weather this October.  I hope you all have the chance to get outside.

Thank you for parents who have signed up for a class party this year.  I know for some of you it is difficult to get to the school to do this so I have now assigned everyone a day if you were unable to get here.  I will send a reminder about the party and what you are bringing before each event.  We do have a nut allergy in our class.  It is only if the nuts are consumed so we do not have to keep our class peanut free from a day to day basis but I will ask that you send peanut free treats for the party so that everyone can enjoy them.  Thank you!

A big thank you in advance for these children and their parents, who will be providing snacks for the Halloween party next Friday:  Young Hoon (fruit plate), Tony (veggie plate),  Myra (sweet treat), Max (popcorn or chips) and Stephanie (cheese and crackers or small sandwiches).  Please note that these will be enjoyed later in the afternoon so your child still needs to bring a lunch/recess snack that day. Also, I do recommend that you send a water bottle that can be refilled as needed for the party.  The children are allowed to wear costumes to school that day.  Please remember that they will still be going outside to play (unless it is absolutely pouring) so if you want them to slip on an extra layer before they go please send it in their backpack and write me a note.

I would also like to send out a big thank you to Vincent's mom for coming to help us with our ghosts on Wednesday.  It was a messy and sticky job (and the kids loved it)!  We will enjoy these in the classroom next week and then they will be sent home to enjoy for Halloween.

Thank you to everyone for continuing to send in planner/memory book money and sketch books for our art program.

****Please note that if your child may have a book bag with a single book in it (some groups will get their books on Monday as they haven't met with me during this rotation yet) in their backpack.  This is for them to practice over the weekend.  Please make sure it comes back on Monday so they can practice for their presentation.  Thank you!

Finally a big thank you to Division 6 parents for helping your children sell/return the Entertainment books.  Not only were we the first class to return the books/money, we also sold the most books.  Well done!  The PAC will be providing us with a pizza party.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

October 17, 2015

Hi Everyone,

Sorry that you were unable to view Friday's post.  For some reason it did not show up on the blog when I posted it.  I hope you all had a great weekend!

Information/Reminders

*memory book/planner money is due
*information verification forms should be returned to the office asap
*sketch pads are still needed as we are waiting for the last pads to arrive so we can begin using them for part of our art program, I am hoping to do some outdoor sketching while the weather holds up
*Mr. Bartel is putting together a Remembrance Day slide show.  Please scan/send any photos you might have of family members who have served in the military if you would like them included.
*this Friday is a professional development day (no school for students).
*this Thursday, October 22 is PJ day!  Please remember that students will still be going outside to play so if you want them to wear other pants please send them in.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Friday 9 October 2015

October 9, 2015

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I hope you all enjoy a fantastic weekend with family and friends.  I look forward to hearing all about everyone's Thanksgiving on Tuesday. You can feel very proud of your children as they were responsible for collecting 13 overflowing boxes of food for the 'Friends in Need Food bank'.  With out their posters, announcements and help with decorating/delivering the boxes fewer people would have food for Thanksgiving this year.  It would be great if you could remind them of how they have helped people in need when you sit down for you Thanksgiving dinner this weekend. Well done, Division 6!!

Reminders...

Next week is the cross country race for primary students who have signed up/been joining us for practices.  At this point everyone from our class appears to have arranged for a ride.  If anything has changed for you, please let me know on Tuesday so that I have time to check driver's abstracts if needed. A reminder with the details (time, place etc.) was handed out at practice today.  If your child did not get one, please write a note or see me on Tuesday.

Your children have brought home their 'Poetry and More' duotangs.  These will be coming home each Friday and should be returned to school on Mondays (Tuesday this week :))  Please take some time to read the poems and/or act out the play with your children.

Please send in your verification forms if you have not already done so, Mrs. Cochrane is busy making sure that everyone's information is up to to date.

Everyone needs to have inside shoes, our classroom is getting quite dirty with the change in weather and it is unsafe in the gym for students to wear wet shoes.

Have a  great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts

Friday 2 October 2015

October 3, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have all begun to enjoy your weekend!  I would like to thank everyone for all of your support this last week.  I have appreciated you taking the time to pop in and offer your condolences.  It has been good to be back at school where your children's energy and humour have put a smile on my face.

I am going to post some October dates on the 'monthly calendar' today but I am at home so I will be adding some additional dates (if I missed any) when I go into the school on Sunday.  Please check back at that time.

Here are a few reminders:

*please send in inside shoes, this is very important for keeping our school clean and for safety in the gym.  Wet, grassy shoes can be very slippery on the wooden floor and can also pose a threat for other students in the class/school.

*next week is fire prevention week, you should have received a package from your child yesterday.  The yellow slip of paper can be returned to enter a contest and we encourage everyone to come up with an emergency exit plan in case of a fire in your home.

*I have a class party sign up ready by the outside door (on a clipboard just inside the room).  Please feel free to pop by and choose 1 party you would like to send treats for.  If you can't make it in, don't worry as I will assign a party to those who don't sign up.  I just like to give you the option of choosing a preferred time. I will put a reminder on this blog just prior to the date you have chosen.

*If you have not already done so, please send in $7.00 for the Memory Books/ $8.00 for the planners (planners can also be paid for via the parent portal)

*It appears that the right planners have now arrived!  We are hoping to start using them next week.

*We have 'West coast' recess/lunch times in our district.  Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Unless it is an absolute downpour, students will most likely be playing outside.  I would also like to utilize our forest regularly and it can be muddy in there on rainy days.  You are welcome to send in a spare set of clothes for your child in case of an accident.

*If you have not already done so, please send in a 'sketch book' for your child.  This does not need to be a high end option, the dollar store sketch books are fine.  Also, pastels and paint sets will be used in this class so if you have not already sent these in it would be great if they could be sent soon.  Thanks so much!

In closing, I would like to let you know that your children have taken leadership in a very important job at our school.  They are taking responsibility for the 'Friends in Need' food drive.  Today we decorated/delivered the collection boxes and made posters promoting this important event.  Next week students will be making daily announcements encouraging everyone to bring in non-perishable food donations.  Their efforts will help a lot of people have a Happy Thanksgiving.  Well done, Division 6!!!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Amanda Roberts

Sunday 27 September 2015

September 27, 2015

Hello Everyone,

I apologize for the late post as I usually try to have everything updated by Friday/Saturday.  I am guessing that many of your children may have told you that I had to leave the school unexpectedly on Wednesday morning.  My dad's health had taken a sudden turn and he was moved to ICU.  I stayed with him until he passed away on Friday morning.  Obviously this is a very sad time for my family but I am eager to get back in the classroom to be surrounded by your children's smiling faces.  It is hard to stay feeling down when you work with kids!

Your children were very well taken care of by a very capable TOC and thanks to Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani stepping in to help out the routines/activities were consistent with what I would have planned had I been here.

I do have a few reminders, the first one being time sensitive and very important.

*This Wednesday is picture day (am) and the Terry Fox run (pm).  At this point very few people have given permission for their children to partake in walking field trips.  This form needs to be completed via the parent portal.  Your child will have to walk the fields at Fairview instead of joining us on the course if they do not have this permission.  If you are having trouble with the portal please contact me at the school (604) 465 9331 or send a note with your child and I will send you a hard copy.  Thank you!  If anyone is available to volunteer that day we would love to have your help.

*sketch pads are needed, along with pastels and water colour paints if you have not already sent them in
*planners have been delayed as we were originally sent the wrong ones, I expect they will arrive in the next week or two.  Please pay $8 for the planner via the portal (or send in a cash or cheque) and $7 for the memory books (cash or cheque payment only available for this fee).

Enjoy the rest of this beautiful, sunny day.

Amanda Roberts

Wednesday 16 September 2015

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Mrs. Roberts' Awesome Class 'Blog'!  If you are reading this then I expect that you received the first class letter.  This blog will now be the primary spot where I communicate with you throughout the year.  You will also be receiving a lot of school based information from Mrs. Watkins via the parent portal so if you have not already registered, please do so.  I have added the important dates in September to the 'Monthly Calendar' section of this blog.  I anticipate that more dates will be added so please check this calendar each week when you come to check the Blog posts.  Please do not try to contact me via the email attached to this account as it is strictly for the blog and I do not check it regularly.  You can contact me at Amanda_Roberts@sd42.ca, by phone (604) 465-9331 or by writing a note in your child's planner (once I receive them :)).

I am looking forward to a great year with your children!

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

June 19th

Wow!  It is hard to believe that this year is coming to an end.  Here are a few last reminders before we say good bye for the summer.

*all book bags/classroom books/library books should be returned to the classroom
*a sturdy shopping bag with your child's name on it should be brought in on Monday so that materials can continue to be brought home (unused materials will be sent home today)
*Tuesday is our class party.  Please see the previous post and/or your child's planner for confirmation of who is bringing treats that day
*Wednesday morning there is a final assembly at 8:45 (each class and the choir will be performing).  Parents are welcome to attend.

A big thank you to our parent volunteers for helping out yesterday (Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Juneja, Mr. Patch and Mrs. Brekkaas).  We had a great time visiting the fire hall/police station and taking part in the Amazing Race.

Also, another big thank you to Mrs. Brekkaas for sharing her musical talents with our class this year.  We really enjoyed it!

Have a great summer, everyone!  I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching your children this year.

June 12, 2015

There is a lot of our excitement in our classroom today.  The students are now in music with Mrs. Godfrey but when they return it will officially be the start of FUN DAY!!!  The weather is cooperating and it is cool/cloudy.  I am sure we will all have a great day!

Reminders/Updates

*please look on the 'Monthly Calendar' part of this blog and make note of important dates in June
*This Monday is 'Mind Up' day.  Students are encouraged to wear green (to help them get into the GREEN ZONE)!  The activities we do on this day will focus on being mindful.  A brochure will be coming home at the end of the day so that you can have a conversation with your children about it.
*please sign up for the field trip (via the portal) if you have not already done so.  If I don't have enough drivers/people signed up by Monday I will need to cancel.
*poetry and more books are coming home today and can now stay at home
*our class party will be in the afternoon on Tuesday, June 23rd as the next day is a half day (12:00 Dismissal).  Thanks in advance to these students for providing snacks for the party: Camille (fruit plate), Jakob (popcorn/chips or pretzels), Shalya (veggie plate), Kenyon (sweet treat), Riley and Trinity (your choice)
*we will not be having spelling next week as we will focus this time on completing other year end work/review

Wednesday 3 June 2015

Last Fieldtrip!

Hi Everyone,

We have planned one final trip to wrap up our unit on community.  We will be having an 'Amazing Race Maple Ridge' on June 18th.  There will be an email arriving soon via the parent portal and we will need volunteers. If we do not have 5 volunteers/class we will have to cancel so if you could register as soon as possible that would be greatly appreciated.  We will start the day with tours of the fire/police department and then meet at the gazebo to begin the race.  It should be lots of fun!

Also, a big thank you to Priya and Jordyn's mom for volunteering on our Grouse field trip last week.  We had a fantastic day!

Finally, our leadership students just announced today that this Friday is going to be 'Hawaiian Day'.  Students are welcome to dress up on that day (it is, of course optional).  I apologize for the late notice but I am just learning of this event myself.  All other June events are now on the 'Monthly Calendar' page of this blog.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

May 22, 2015

Hi Everyone,

It looks like another nice weekend ahead!  Enjoy!

Thank you to everyone for helping research your child's science project with them.  The students are coming to school well prepared and with a good understanding of the science behind their project.  Well done, everyone!

Just a reminder that next Friday is our field trip to Grouse.  As I mentioned on a previous post, the three parents who will be joining us as volunteers are Shayla's mom, Jordyn's mom and Priya's mom.  I have not heard from anyone else who plans to drive there and pay their own entry fee.  If you are planning on doing this, please let me know as we have to give our numbers well in advance.  Thank you!

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Hi Everyone,

It is almost the long weekend and the weather is supposed to be lovely so I hope everyone has the chance to get outside and enjoy it!

Reminders:

*please refer to the monthly calendar on this blog for important upcoming dates
*the gallery walk next week will be informal, please feel free to come by any time during the day to wander through the halls and check out Fairview's artists (please sign in/get a Visitor tag from the office first).  We will be looking at the art as a class but if you would like to take your child out of class for a few minutes to enjoy the art with you, you are also welcome to do that.
*the Grouse Mountain field trip is fast approaching.  We have our 3 parent volunteers already but if you are interested in joining us (driving/paying your own entry fee) then please return the notice I sent home or write a note in your child's planner.  Please sign your child up via the Parent Portal if you have not already done so.
*Tuesday is a professional day so there will be no school for students on that day

Happy Mother's Day!

I hope all the moms out there are spoiled this Sunday.  Your children are VERY excited about the gift that they made you (they will need a little adult/older sibling help on Sunday morning).

Reminders...

*your child should be preparing an experiment to present on his/her 'Scientist' day (this form was sent home two weeks ago, if you need a new one please ask your child to come and see me)
*please register/pay for your child's field trip to Grouse Mountain at the end of this month (see Portal) As I mentioned in my last Blog entry we now have the 3 volunteer parents who will accompany us.  The letter that was sent home was just in case anyone wanted to drive/pay their own way. We won't be able to accommodate parents on the bus who show up for the trip on that day (we need to have lists handed in before this time)
*our poetry recital is this Monday at 10:35.  The goal is to have every student memorize his/her poem (although they may take it on stage if they need it)  Please help your child practice this, focusing on volume/expression.  We hope to see you Monday!
*our 'Fun Day' will be held on June 12th (volunteers will be needed-a form with more specific information is coming home today

Friday 24 April 2015

April 24, 2105

Hello Everyone,

Well, our Starbucks field trip was rained/hailed out but we did enjoy our hot chocolate in the classroom.  Thank you to the parents who helped out with this and Mrs. Vamplew for supplying marshmallows.

Earlier this week your child brought home a notice with attachments about our upcoming 'Scientist of the Day'.  Please help your child practice for a brief presentation of their experiment to the class.  There is a schedule on the back of the package.

Your child will also be brining a poem home over the next couple of days.  This is for the primary poetry recital on May 11 (10:35-12:00).  Grade 2's are working in pairs and grade 3's are presenting on their own (either an original poem they have written or one they have selected).  This is a great way to prepare for public speaking which begins in grade 4.  We are hoping that students can memorize their poem and they will also be getting some class time to practice.

A reminder to please sign up for the Grouse Mountain field trip if you have not already done so.

I have added on important dates in May to our 'Monthly Calendar' section of the Blog.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

April 17, 2015

Hi Everyone,

It looks like a sunny weekend ahead.  I hope everyone has the opportunity to get outside and enjoy it.

A big thank you to our parent drivers for taking us to the ACT Theater.  (A special thanks to parents in Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani's class who offered to drive our class too so that we could also attend).  The students really enjoyed the play and were very well behaved.  They represented Fairview Elementary very nicely!

Please remember to check the portal and sign up for our Grouse Mountain Fieldtrip which will be taking place at the end of May.  Parent drivers will not be needed but we are always happy to have volunteers come and help supervise.

We are also planning to walk to Starbucks next Friday to enjoy the hot chocolate we earned during 'Club Red'.  We will do this first thing in the morning (instead of Family Reading) so please come and join us if you are able.

Please feel free to come and see my or write a note in your child's planner if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Friday 10 April 2015

April 10, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have had the chance to get outside and enjoy the sunshine this week.  We have been very fortunate!

Reminders:

*our 'ACT Theater' fieldtrip is next week (April 16th).  Please sign your child up via the portal if you have not already done so.  All students need to be registered by April 14th as registration will no longer be available via the portal after that time.  If you are having difficulty with the portal I can arrange a time to walk you through it or you can complete a paper permission form.  Please write a note in your child's planner for Monday morning if you need a hard copy of this form.  We are still short drivers for this field trip.

*the students have brought home a paper to complete their homework on.  The assignment is explained on the half paper that was sent home with it (draw/write a sentence or 2 about their favourite place in our community)  It is due on Tuesday, April 14th.

*The next morning exercise session with Mrs. Godin begins on May 7th.  Interested students from our class has been participating in the first session but I wanted to notify you of this date in case any siblings/friends are signed up/interested.

*The primary 'Grouse Mountain' field trip booked for May 29th is also available on the Parent Portal.  We will be hiring a bus for that trip so parent drivers will not be needed but parent volunteers will still be necessary.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

March 26, 2015

Welcome back, everyone!  I hope you all had a fantastic Spring Break!
We just celebrated our 100th day of school.  All of the primaries moved around the school and participated in 100 themed stations.  Remember to ask your child which station he/she liked best! :)

Reminders:

*Two field trips have been posted on the parent portal (Pinocchio and Grouse Mountain).  Please sign up for the Pinocchio fieldtrip ASAP as we have to pay the Act Theater next week and there will be no refunds.  Drivers are required for this fieldtrip, please.  I also need 2-3 parents who are willing to stay and enjoy the play with us.  The cost is $8 per person.  Please see me if you are able to volunteer in this capacity.

*Next Friday is Good Friday and Monday is Easter so there will be no school on those days

*I have now added on April's activities to the 'Monthly Calendar'.  Please check this page each week as updates do occasionally occur.

Thank you!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

March 5, 2015

I hope everyone is outside enjoying this beautiful, sunny day!

Here are a few updates/reminders:

***Important dates in March can now be found in the 'Monthly Calendar' section of this Blog***

*tomorrow is the 'Club Red' celebration (you can wear something red if you have it)

*Raz Kids levels have been updated (do not be concerned if your child's level hasn't changed, particularly if it is level M which covers a wide range of reading levels).  If your child finishes every book before leaving that level, please let me know.

*'Your time' will be beginning after Spring Break!  The first 15 minutes of each day (Monday through Thursday due to Family Reading on Fridays) will be a time when students can bring something from home to show their classmates, play a game, create a project etc.  Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani has been doing this in her class as part of her graduate studies and has had very positive results. I do ask that electronics be left at home, along with anything fragile or valuable as students will be allowed to move freely and I would not want to see anything special to your family broken/damaged.

*Friday your child will be bringing home a piece of paper so that he/she can create a '100 Day Project'. You do not have to use this specific piece of paper if you have something else in mind.  This project can be a poster, sculpture, whatever your child wants to make, as long as it is made with 100 items (examples:  popcorn, cheerios, marshmallows, lego, pennies, stickers etc).  Be creative and have fun!  We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Thursday, March 26th so please send in all projects by Wednesday, March 25th so that I can put them on display.  Thanks so much!

*We have booked tickets for Divisions 6 and 7 to see 'Pinnochio' at the ACT theater on April 16th (drivers will be needed, notice will be posted after the break.

Have a wonderful spring break, everyone!

We are starting something new on Monday called YOUR TIME!
Each morning except Friday (because we have Family Reading) students will have the opportunity to spend the first 15 minutes of their day doing whatever they choose to do.   Children like most adults like to have time to socialize and share things, ‘Your Time’ will give them an opportunity to do this or sit with a group of friends to play a new card game they had just learned, read a book together or show their peers a craft they had made, etc. Students are welcome to bring in something from home but they are responsible for it and after 15 minutes it will be put away for the day. So yes they are allowed to bring things from home with your permission (toys, trophies or ribbons, something they have made or just discovered).  We will not be doing Show and Tell or Sharing this year so this is a time that they can bring something in to share with some of their peers.   The children asked about pets, if it is a pet that has a cage and you are okay with it staying the day then that is fine or if the parent is willing (and able) to bring the pet for that 15 minute time frame and then take it home that is also okay.   No Pokemon cards or electronics are allowed out during Your Time but our class does have access to some IPads, if they wanted to do some research.
I got the idea of ‘Your Time’ at the university graduate program that I am currently taking, other teachers have found it successful both socially and academically.  Even large corporate companies like Google and Facebook have realized the importance of giving their employees time to do what they want and by doing this, creativity and problem solving has drastically increased.
For these reasons I was anxious to experiment with ‘Your Time’ and see how the students in Division 7 feel and respond to this opportunity.    Thank you for your support with this!

*A big THANK YOU to all of our parent drivers.  We had a great time skating yesterday :)
*The conference link is now set up for March conferences (see link on this blog).  A reminder that the procedure is the same as the last conference.  You sign up for one 15 minute time slot only.  That time will be spent going over your child's work with them.  The next 15 minutes will be spent with all of us together, celebrating your child's progress and goal setting for the final term.
*We are looking for donations for outdoor play equipment to be used during recess/lunch.  If anyone has any balls, badminton rackets etc. they would like to donate to our class that would be greatly appreciated.
*Please note that the early dismissal day on March 4th is 11:40, not 11:00 as we were originally told
*Please ensure that your child is only logging into their account for Raz kids, some peoples accounts have been tampered with

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Reminders/Information:

*please mark your calendars with all of the special events that are happening in February.

*please ensure that you are signing your child's 'Club Red' calendar every day (after they have read to you).

*thank you to everyone who sent treats for the Valentine's party.  They look delicious and will be enjoyed during our party this afternoon.

*thank you for sending in the paper rolls.  There are some very creative ideas at work during the marble maze building

*forms for the Reebok sponsored exercise program (that is fun AND free!) should be sent in ASAP to ensure that your child has a space if you are interested

Please Note:

We are still short drivers for skating.  If you are planning on driving your own child (but didn't include that one the form) please notify me so I know how many students I need to find rides for.  If another class has space we will join them, otherwise we will have to cancel the field trip.  You will need to have a driver's abstract on file to drive other children.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

February 6th, 2015

Hi Everyone!

It is almost the long weekend!  I hope everyone has an exciting day planned for 'Family Day' on Monday.  I only have a few reminders as I wrote quite an extensive entry last week.  If you have not yet viewed that, please take the time to do so.  It includes information about our Valentine's day party (who is bringing snacks) and a list of student names so everyone can be included when cards are being made.  Also, last week I posted our February calendar (click on the heading that says 'Monthly Calendar'.  February is a very busy month!  I have also included the conference dates in that entry so that you can begin to make arrangements as necessary.

*I have about half the classes skating forms in at this point but only enough drivers to take 5 students.  If you could please send this form in early next week that would be much appreciated.  That way if we are short drivers I can try to make arrangements with other classes (or cancel the field trip if necessary).

*Please continue to save/send in paper rolls.  The first group's attempt at making their own marble maze was very successful and they have set the bar high for the remaining 5 groups.  The problem solving, testing/retesting and collaboration that went on was outstanding!

Next week's 'Club Red' activity is 'Poem in a pocket'.  Please see the club red information sheet for details.

Have a wonderful time with your families this weekend,

Amanda Roberts

February News (January 30th)

Hi Everyone,

February is a very busy month! Please check the 'Monthly Calendar' on this blog for specific dates and mark your personal calendars.  Please note that we will be going skating the afternoon of February 19th and we will need parent drivers for this.  The permission slip will be coming home on Monday.

Your child brought home an information sheet/calendar about a school wide program we are doing next month called 'Club Red'.  Please read with your child each day and sign their calendar.  If 90% of our class returns their completed sheets we will be in a draw for a pizza party.  We will have a big celebration at the beginning of March.

February 14th is also Valentine's Day.  It falls on a weekend this year so we will be having our class party on February 13th.  Thanks in advance to the following students and their parents for bringing snacks:  Priya (fruit plate), Faizan (veggies), Stephanie (cheese and crackers or mini sandwiches), Sarabeth (sweet treat) and Nicholas (popcorn or chips).  We will be having our party in the afternoon so you will still need to send a lunch for your children.

Here is a list of the student's names so that everyone can be included when you are writing Valentines:

Kenyon, Novah, Stephanie, Jaxon, Jacob N., Camille, Jakob B., Shayla, Criss, Riley, Karman, Priya, Sarabeth, Jordyn, Faizan, Nicholas, Trinity, Kendra, Geena, Zackary, Dharma

Also, just a reminder that we are continuing to collect paper rolls for our marble maze.  Thank you for sending those in.

Have great weekend, everyone!

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder that  Monday is a district professional development day and Tuesday is a school growth planning day so there will be no school for students on these days.  We will not have spelling due to the shortened week.  We will continue with our spelling program the following week and I wanted to remind everyone that there is a link to 'Spelling City' on this blog where students can play games while they practice their words.  I put the new lists on at the beginning of each week.

Also, we are hoping to create a giant marble maze during our next round of Explorations so if you have any paper rolls that you aren't using it would be great if you could send them in.

Have a great (long) weekend, everyone!

January 16, 2015

Hi Everyone,

Friday afternoon certainly looks beautiful, hopefully the great weather will continue over the weekend. I have a couple of requests to include this week:

*I am still looking for 1-2 volunteers to come in and help with hand/foot prints for an art project which we will put in our memory books.  If you are available, please come and see me or jot a note in your child's planner.  Thank you!
*If you have any paper rolls (toilet paper, paper towel, wrapping) please send them in.  We will be using them in a couple of weeks to create our own marble mazes during the next round of Explorations
*When you are helping your children study for their spelling quiz this week, please remind them to use lower case letters when printing them out (and capitals only when needed).  I have told the students that their answers will be marked as incorrect next week if they don't use lower case letters.  There are too many capitals popping up in the middle of words! :) We have been working on eliminating this habit in class.  Each child has an alphabet/number line on the back of their nametags to assist with this.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

January 8, 2015 Volunteers Wanted!

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone's year is off to a great start.  The children (and their teacher :)) were all very tired that first day back but it didn't take long to get back into the swing of things.  Everyone is now settled into a routine.

The students have written this in their planner but I am sending you a note to let you know that tomorrow is 'CRAZY HAIR DAY'.  Please see the new January calendar (under the link that says 'Monthly Calendar') for more important dates in January.

Today we started a weekly sing-a-long/music lesson.  Everyone had a great time singing the songs and learning about notes.  Thank you, Mrs. Brekkaas for volunteering to do this with our class!

I am looking for 2 volunteers to come in next week to paint the children's hands and feet (yes, you read that correctly).  We will be using these prints as part of a 'New Year's' activity for our memory books.

Finally, if anyone has any board games that are appropriate for this age (and contain all of the pieces) that you would like to donate, they would be greatly appreciated.  We had a games class with our big buddies yesterday and it was a big success.  They are also great to have for 'Choice' days when most students stay inside at recess or lunch.

Thanks so much,

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mrs. Roberts
