March 26, 2015

Welcome back, everyone!  I hope you all had a fantastic Spring Break!
We just celebrated our 100th day of school.  All of the primaries moved around the school and participated in 100 themed stations.  Remember to ask your child which station he/she liked best! :)

Reminders:

*Two field trips have been posted on the parent portal (Pinocchio and Grouse Mountain).  Please sign up for the Pinocchio fieldtrip ASAP as we have to pay the Act Theater next week and there will be no refunds.  Drivers are required for this fieldtrip, please.  I also need 2-3 parents who are willing to stay and enjoy the play with us.  The cost is $8 per person.  Please see me if you are able to volunteer in this capacity.

*Next Friday is Good Friday and Monday is Easter so there will be no school on those days

*I have now added on April's activities to the 'Monthly Calendar'.  Please check this page each week as updates do occasionally occur.

Thank you!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

March 5, 2015

I hope everyone is outside enjoying this beautiful, sunny day!

Here are a few updates/reminders:

***Important dates in March can now be found in the 'Monthly Calendar' section of this Blog***

*tomorrow is the 'Club Red' celebration (you can wear something red if you have it)

*Raz Kids levels have been updated (do not be concerned if your child's level hasn't changed, particularly if it is level M which covers a wide range of reading levels).  If your child finishes every book before leaving that level, please let me know.

*'Your time' will be beginning after Spring Break!  The first 15 minutes of each day (Monday through Thursday due to Family Reading on Fridays) will be a time when students can bring something from home to show their classmates, play a game, create a project etc.  Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani has been doing this in her class as part of her graduate studies and has had very positive results. I do ask that electronics be left at home, along with anything fragile or valuable as students will be allowed to move freely and I would not want to see anything special to your family broken/damaged.

*Friday your child will be bringing home a piece of paper so that he/she can create a '100 Day Project'. You do not have to use this specific piece of paper if you have something else in mind.  This project can be a poster, sculpture, whatever your child wants to make, as long as it is made with 100 items (examples:  popcorn, cheerios, marshmallows, lego, pennies, stickers etc).  Be creative and have fun!  We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Thursday, March 26th so please send in all projects by Wednesday, March 25th so that I can put them on display.  Thanks so much!

*We have booked tickets for Divisions 6 and 7 to see 'Pinnochio' at the ACT theater on April 16th (drivers will be needed, notice will be posted after the break.

Have a wonderful spring break, everyone!

We are starting something new on Monday called YOUR TIME!
Each morning except Friday (because we have Family Reading) students will have the opportunity to spend the first 15 minutes of their day doing whatever they choose to do.   Children like most adults like to have time to socialize and share things, ‘Your Time’ will give them an opportunity to do this or sit with a group of friends to play a new card game they had just learned, read a book together or show their peers a craft they had made, etc. Students are welcome to bring in something from home but they are responsible for it and after 15 minutes it will be put away for the day. So yes they are allowed to bring things from home with your permission (toys, trophies or ribbons, something they have made or just discovered).  We will not be doing Show and Tell or Sharing this year so this is a time that they can bring something in to share with some of their peers.   The children asked about pets, if it is a pet that has a cage and you are okay with it staying the day then that is fine or if the parent is willing (and able) to bring the pet for that 15 minute time frame and then take it home that is also okay.   No Pokemon cards or electronics are allowed out during Your Time but our class does have access to some IPads, if they wanted to do some research.
I got the idea of ‘Your Time’ at the university graduate program that I am currently taking, other teachers have found it successful both socially and academically.  Even large corporate companies like Google and Facebook have realized the importance of giving their employees time to do what they want and by doing this, creativity and problem solving has drastically increased.
For these reasons I was anxious to experiment with ‘Your Time’ and see how the students in Division 7 feel and respond to this opportunity.    Thank you for your support with this!
