December 17, 2016

Hi Everyone,

This blog post is all about giving thanks.

First, I would like to thank all of your for your generosity.  I really appreciate all of the cards, gifts and well wishes.

Second, I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the parent drivers for taking us to skating this week. We were all so impressed by the improvement the children have made since the last time we went.  We will be going skating one more time in the new year so hopefully everyone will all be feeling confident after that session.

A big thank you also to the parents who provided the treats for our holiday party.  We enjoyed a fun afternoon of sharing food, listening to Christmas music and playing together.

Finally, thank you all for attending our Christmas concert.  The children were really excited to have you there and I think they did a fantastic job in their performance.

Merry Christmas, everyone!  I hope you all have the opportunity to spend lots of time together as a family this holiday season :)

Take Care,

Amanda Roberts

December 9, 2016

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all get the chance to get outside and enjoy the snow this weekend.  We have had a lot of fun today playing together outside and I think I know where everyone will be for 'Free time Friday' this afternoon!

We only have one week to go before the holidays but it will be a busy one (and lots of fun!)

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*we will be having 2 dress rehearsals and 2 concerts.  Remember that you must have pre ordered tickets in order to attend the concerts (see dates on calendar section of the blog).  We would like the children to wear pajamas on Monday as it is the dress rehearsal that the whole school will be attending.  Students will still be going outside so please send snow pants (if we still have snow) and/or a change of pants if you don't want them wearing their pjs outside.
*please remember that your child needs to attend the evening performance even if you are not coming to watch at that time
*We are skating on Thursday afternoon (see parent portal for details).  We are short drivers at this time so if you are able to drive that would be fantastic.  Remember you must have a current driver's abstract on file in order to drive students (they are quick and easy to complete).  Just send a note in your child's planner if you need the forms.
*next Friday is our class party.  Please see the previous post for the list of students signed up to bring treats.  Thank you in advance for sending them in.
*please send booster seats to school on Thursday
*please send in the dollar for the hippo ears (they look fantastic!) and $10 for your child's memory book if you have not already done so.
*we will continue to go outside for recess, lunch and playtime in the forest unless the weather is extreme.  Please send in a change of clothes for your child if you have not already done so.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Amanda Roberts

December 2, 2016

Hi Everyone,

It is hard to believe that we only have 2 more weeks of school before Christmas!  There is certainly a lot of excitement in the air!

Information/Reminders/Thank you's

*at this point everyone should have received information on how to get tickets for the Christmas Concert (via this blog, the notice went home FB or the parent portal email).  Tickets are free but you must have a ticket to come to the concert and these need to be arranged in advance.  If you are having any trouble with this, please come and see me or send me an email.  Also, please note that your child needs to attend every performance (even if you are not watching in the evening you will need to drop them off and pick them up)  Thank you!
*please see the calendar section of the blog for important upcoming dates, including the Christmas concerts
*we will be wearing pyjamas and hippo ears for the concert (a big thank you to Mason's mom, Miranda for doing this).  Please send in your loonie to pay for the materials we need to purchase to make these.
*please send in the $10 for memory books if you have not already done so
*December 6th will be the last day that we are collecting money/toys for the hamper society if you are interested in donating.  Thank you for the donations we have received thus far!
*I spent the day in New Westminster yesterday to see if I would be selected for jury duty, thankfully I was not as I would have had to miss the last week of school before the holidays!
*I will be away next Thursday morning as I am part of a team of teachers from Fairview who put forth an application to be part a curriculum development inservice group (and were lucky to be chosen).  This is being led by 3 outstanding leaders in our district so we are very fortunate to have this opportunity as they will be guiding us on how to further enhance our teaching using the new curriculum guidelines.  Most of our meetings will be occurring outside of school time but we will have the occasional meeting during the day over the next few months.
*A big thank you to Makena's mom, Amanda for baking the cupcakes.  We had a lot of fun turning them into bats!
*I would like to ask you to send the bat hats back to school again, I originally came up with the idea to take the photos with the kids hanging upside down but the weather didn't cooperate.  We did take a photo inside with our giant bat but some of the students really want to do the upside down photo and it would be a great addition to their memory books.  If your child still has his/her hat, please send it back to school (Myra, Kayleigh and Wyatt need to bring theirs as they were absent).  If you have already thrown out the bat hat, don't worry as we can share.  Sorry to ask you to do this once again but the children are pretty excited and asked if we could still do it.
*Our class Christmas party will be in the afternoon on the last day of school.  Thank you an advance to these students/parents for bringing in snacks that day Lily (fruit plate), Chase (veggie plate), Myra (cheese/crackers), Rachel (sweet treat), Alexis (popcorn, chips or pretzels and Jesse (other).  Please remember that you still need to send a snack and lunch on that day.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Nov. 25. 2016

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all getting the chance to enjoy the sunshine today!

Updates, Reminders, Thank you's

*a big thank you to everyone for coming into celebrate your child's learning!  I feel confident that we have set some worthwhile and achievable goals for the upcoming term.
*thank you to all of the grandparents/parents who came and helped make the 'grandparent day' a huge success, we really had a wonderful time thanks to a very enthusiastic group!

*Our Christmas play will be coming soon (please see the calendar on this blog for the dates/times).  Tickets are mandatory for the concert this year.  I am sending home an information letter on Monday as many have expressed that they missed the email from Mrs. Watkins or are unclear about 'how this is all working'

*we are singing 'I Want a Hippopotamus for Christms' and will be wearing pajamas and hippo ears.  A parent from Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani's class has kindly offered to volunteer her time to make the hippo headbands and we are asking for $1/student to cover the cost of supplies.  Thank you!

*this upcoming Wednesday, November 30th we will be wrapping up our bat unit with a bat celebration.  Please send your child with their bat headband (the one they made on grandparents day) on Wednesday so that we can get some pictures for the memory book.  They could also wear brown or black if they have clothes this colour.  Also, we have some icing leftover from grandparents day and thought that we would make 'batty cupcakes' as part of our wind up .  If anyone is able to volunteer to bake 24 cupcakes for the class that would be greatly appreciated.  Please see me Monday or write a note in your child's planner if you are able to do this.  Thank you!

*some parents were asking me for some suggestions for good online websites or apps to practice speed of additional and subtraction, multiplication, place value etc.  ABCya (link is on this website) is an excellent resource and some math apps that we like to use at school include Math Kid, Math Academy and Splash Math (you can buy the more extensive version or use the basic as we do), Sushi Monster, and Math Regrouping (free-it has a lion head on the front).

*another question came up about how much reading you should be doing with your child each night and which books you should focus on.  In your child's book bag there will usually be one book that has a yellow post it.  Please practice this book with your child until he/she is confident.  Beyond that, you can read 10-15 minutes each night from their JRR bag, the book they choose each day from school, books you already have at home or RAZ kids.  Really the goal is to help your children develop a love for reading.  I am just providing a number of resources for you to use and encourage you to work with whatever suits your schedule and lifestyle.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Dear Parents,

You can feel the excitement in the air! Halloween is almost here!  I hope you all enjoy a fun and memorable evening on Monday.

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*Our class Halloween Party will be Monday afternoon.  Please send a healthy snack and lunch as we will be enjoying our Halloween snacks closer to the end of the day.
*Please see the previous post regarding who is sending treats in and for details about what our day is going to look like on Monday
*Please save the majority of Halloween Candy to be enjoyed at home and send only 1 or 2 treats to school next week (no lollipops or gum, please)
*We are short drivers for the upcoming field trip.  I will be sending out an email later today with our alternate plan once I have confirmation.  Please remember to send booster seats for the field trip
*We will have a school wide 'Pajama Day' on November 1st
*Please ensure that your children are reading nightly and that JRR book bags are coming back and forth each day.  I will be changing the books next week so it will be important that your children have them here so that we can make a trade.
*Thank you to Mrs. Koshlay for joining us on our field trip to the Public Library.  The bus ride was a great experience for everyone and the presenter, Kallie George was enthusiastic and inspiring.  I have added a link to her website in the 'Useful Links' part of this blog as you may want to take a look (and one of her books may make a great Christmas present for your child).  Ask them about the egg she brought in...no one is sure whether it was real or not? :)

Have a great weekend,

Amanda Roberts

Oct. 19, 2016

Hi Everyone,

We are having a great time learning about bats in Division 8.  Together we have come up with many 'wonders' about bats and we have already discovered the answers to many of our questions.  Ask your children about echolocation and what else they have discovered about bats so far.  I think you will be impressed!  I have been!

Updates/Reminders

*you will now have received 2 field trip emails, please sign your child up via the parent portal, we apologize for the late notice on the field trip next Wednesday, October 26th but we were just given this exciting opportunity to meet/hear about the writing process from a local children's book author. We passed on the information to you as soon as we were given the offer. If there are not enough drivers we will cancel but hopefully we can make this happen despite the late notice.
*drivers are needed for both field trips, thank you in advance for your help with this
*October 28 the leadership group would like to do a 'colour block' dress up day.  Students can choose their favourite colour and dress head to toe in that colour :)

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all enjoy this stormy weekend.  Many of the children had a great time running around outside on this windy afternoon (during our 'Free Time Friday' block.  The highlight was definitely watching a woman fly her kite on the field but we also enjoyed flying paper airplanes and frisbees (one of which was blown upon the roof)!

Information/Reminders/Thank you

*We have booked a field trip for Nov. 2.  The portal permission slip will be arriving via email early next week.  Parent drivers will be needed.
*Your child has brought home his/her JRR book bag today.  Detailed information about this is contained in a letter inside the bag.  Please keep this with your planner and have your child bring it to/from school each day.  Books will be changed every 2-3 weeks.
*Monday we will be starting 'Your time'.  The first 15 minutes of the day your child will be able to choose a preferred activity (indoors or outside).  This is also a good time to bring in sharing, a family pet, a new game (no electronics, please etc.  We will be enjoying this time Monday-Thursday and will continue to have family reading on Fridays.
*A reminder as weather is changing that we will be going outside rain/shine for recess/lunch and as a class.  Children will only be kept inside during extreme weather conditions.  Please dress your child in appropriate clothing and have inside shoes and an extra set of clothes at the school.

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have all been getting out to enjoy the sunshine.  We have had a busy week at Fairview which included the Terry Fox Run and our Open House on Thursday night.

Information/Reminders/Thank you's

*I am currently coaching basketball and cross country after school, so I just wanted to let you know that if you are unable to pick up your child by 2:25 I will be sending him/her to the office area to wait for you.  That way your child will be in a safe environment and I can meet up with the students to begin practice on time.  Thanks for help and understanding with this.

*We will be sending a notice home on Monday regarding our first skating field trip.  This will be happening on the morning of October 14th (details will be on the form).  Parent drivers will be needed for this field trip.  Thanks so much!

*Our class is spearheading the 'Friends in Need Food bank' Thanksgiving Food Drive.  We began our efforts by making posters and labeling/delivering boxes to the other classes.  Next week students will begin daily announcements to encourage others to donate for this worthy cause.  Non-perishable food items will be collected from Monday to Friday next week.  Thank you in advance for your donations :)

*Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Terry Fox Run and/or sent in donations.  It was a big success!

*Thank you for joining us for the open house on Thursday night.  If you were unable to make it but would like to come by and see your child's classroom just let me know and we can arrange a time.

*A reminder to send in your earthquake kit if you have not already done so.  I also encourage parents to send a change of clothes in a clearly marked bag that can be kept at school as we will be going out side regularly, rain or shine

*We have decided to postpone our field trip to Save On Foods until January and plan to focus on Bats for the month of October.  We hope to plan a field trip around this theme in November and will notify you once we have secured a date.  Thank you!

Sept. 16th, 2016

Hi Everyone!  Welcome to Div.8's classroom blog.  I will be posting new information/updates on this site each week (most often on Friday).  I ask that you please check in every weekend to find out what events will be happening in the school/classroom.  Thanks so much!  I am looking forward to a great year with your children and your parent involvement will be greatly appreciated!
**Please note: You may contact me via our school email:  Amanda_Roberts@sd42.ca  Please do not try to reach me at the email attached to this blog as I do not check it.  Thank you!

Important Dates
The dates that you will need to make note of for September are in the 'Monthly Calendar' section of this blog.  Looking ahead you may also want to take note of dates that we were able to secure for skating: October 14th (am), December 15th (pm) and March 8th (am).  You will receive more detailed information/permission forms via the parent portal closer to the time of each event but I just wanted to give you the 'heads up' in case you would like to join us.  Parent drivers will be needed for these field trips.

The Terry Fox Run has been rescheduled.  It is now on September 27th as Mrs. Watkins was able to secure a special guest to speak to the school on that day.

Reminders
*$55 is due for each student in the primary grades as we have pre-purchased school supplies for everyone this year.  This price also includes the cost of the school planner.
*please complete the walking permission forms for your child (via the parent portal).  Permission needs to be given in order for your child to go 'off site' for the Terry Fox Run.
*please send a pair of indoor running shoes for your child to change into each day, these help to keep our school clean and our gym floor dry (so that it is not slippery)

Thanks so much!

June 2. 2016

Hi Everyone,

It is hard to believe that I am writing the last post of the year.  This year has really flown by.  Today we worked on a page for our memory books about our top 5 favourite moments of the year and we were all amazed by how much we had done!  Here are a few last reminders before we wrap up for the summer:

*our class party will be on Monday, June 27th.  Thanks in advance to these people for bringing in snacks to share:  Camille (fruit plate), Daniel (veggie plate), Emily (cheese/crackers or small sandwiches), Danielle 9 (popcorn or chips) and Brayden (other).  Please still send lunches on that day as our party will be in the afternoon (I am reposting this in case anyone missed it last week).
*please check your homes for any classroom/library books and return
*any donations of gently used books or miscellaneous craft supplies are always welcome
*supplies/work are coming home each day so that the student don't have a heavy bag on the last day
*please do not send planners on Monday, students will no longer be signing out books and the extra space in backpacks will be used to send home supplies
*Tuesday is our last day of school, it will be a 12:00 dismissal
*reports will be sent home by Mrs. Watkins via the parent portal this Saturday, there will be no hard copies distributed by teachers this term.  Please see me if you have any questions.

May 27, 2016

Hi Everyone,

I have a few items to share with you as we head into the weekend.  I hope you are all able to enjoy some family time.

*'Change for Change' is a fundraiser that is going to be going on next week.  This is being led by our Leadership students to help fundraise for clean water in Equador.  If you would like to send a donation of any loose change you may have at home that would be greatly appreciated
*Our class has won a hot chocolate from Starbucks (as part of our Club Red Reading).  I would like to go as a class one morning right after the bell.  I am asking parents who would be interested in walking with us to see me next week regarding days you are available so that I can select a date.  There will be no permission form for this as the walking field trip form you completed at the beginning of the school year will suffice.  Once I find out when parents are available I will post a date.  It will most likely be the week after our field trip.
*If you have signed up to drive for the field trip please make sure you have an abstract on record.  We are in need of one more driver if anyone else is available.  Thank you!

Have a  great weekend, everyone!

April 29th, 2016

April is almost over and it has been a very busy month at Fairview.  We have really enjoyed all of the extra 'Club Red' activities and 'Decades Day' was a hit.

Information/Reminders
*Tomorrow is the last day for the reading calendar for Club Red.  Please remember that you must initial each flower and that your child can then colour it.  Calendars need to be returned next Tuesday or Wednesday, please.  Our celebration is on Friday, May 6th.  Your child can wear red to school that day.
*Monday is a day for teachers to meet/discuss the new curriculum.  There will be no school for students.
*The Rocky Point field trip is on the parent portal.  Please sign up if you haven't already.  If you are driving/supervising please send $10 cash in as the portal will not allow us to include 2 separate prices (the cost for students is $15)
*Important dates for May are now on the calendar (on this blog).  Please note that I have included all of the information I have to date but occasionally the leadership group adds on new activities which you will informed of via blog posts/your child's planner once I know
*Just a reminder that there is a link on this blog for practicing extra math, we haven't been using it in the lab yet as it still closed but it is a great practice tool for your child to use at home

Have a great long weekend, everyone!

Happy Earth Day!  I hope you all get the chance to get outside and enjoy our beautiful community this weekend!

Updates/Reminders

*Thank you to those of you who have already signed your children up for our June field trip and offered to drive.  If you are a parent who is driving/volunteering to join us please send the $10 payment for your boat trip into the school (cheque or cash) as the portal would not give us two different price options.

*Thank you to Priya and Duncan's families for sending in some much needed pencils!

*Scholastic book orders went home yesterday.  They are due on May 3rd.  Remember you can now pay online!

*Next week is 'Poem in a Pocket' for Club Red-please see the parent letter that was sent home for more information

*The children all have homework this weekend.  There mission is to do something 'extra' to help the earth.  I have asked them to talk to you to get help with this and they will report to me on Monday.   This can include turning off lights, walking instead of driving, picking up garbage, planting some seeds etc.

Have a great weekend!

New 'Dress Up' Day

Hi Everyone,

The Leadership group just put up a poster announcing that this Thursday.  Students can dress up as their favourite decade-60's, 70's, 80's?  It's up to you and, of course it is an optional activity.  Sorry about the late notice but I am just finding out about it myself.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

April 15, 2016

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick note to say thank you to all of our parent (and grandparent) drivers who helped out yesterday.  Everyone really enjoyed the play 'Peter Pan'.  We will have one more field trip in June (June 9th) that will require parent drivers/volunteers.  It is a whole day field trip that will require parent participation so hopefully we will have enough people available to join us for the day.

Reminders/Updates

It is 'Club Red' for the entire month of April.  Students should be reading every day and colouring their calendars.  Please initial each box as they finish reading.

Next Friday we will be celebrating 'Earth Day' for 'Club Red' by wearing blue/green and brining in a book about nature.

The Leadership Students are promoting another special day at Fairview.  On April 28th students can participate in 'Jeans Day' as part of a fundraising campaign for Children's Hospital.  Students can simply wear jeans and bring in a twoonie to donate.

We are out of pencils!  If anyone has extra pencils or wouldn't mind picking up a package to donate to the class that would be much appreciated.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Amanda Roberts

April 8. 2016

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few updates and reminders:

***We are still short drivers for the Peter Pan field trip-I only have enough spots for 11 children to attend and will have to cancel if we don't have drivers in place by Tuesday, April 12th.  Please phone/email (Amanda_Roberts@sd42.ca_ or write a note in your child's planner if you are able to drive.   A driver's abstract must be on file, they are quick and easy to do.  You can now phone in and arrange to have your abstract faxed to the school.  I can send a form home with your child if you need one.  If you are able to drive please meet at our classroom at 11:50.  We will get organized and leave the school by 12:00.  The play begins at 12:30 and is approximately an hour and half long so we will return to the school by bell time.  Thank you!

*Please ensure that your child is colouring each day of the calendar for Club Red and that you initial it.  The calendars have to be completed in order for your child to be a 'Club Red' member.
*Our library will reopen next week (a pipe broke over spring break and the library and computer lab have been closed while they dry out).  The computer lab will remain closed until further notice.
*Save the Date:  We have booked a field trip to Rocky Point on June 9th to support our 'Ocean's' unit.  This will be our last field trip of the year.  It will include a boat trip and parents are welcome to join us for this event.  Volunteer drivers will also be needed, thank you!
*Unfinished spelling will be coming home Wednesday/Thursday nights and is due each Friday.  Please ensure that it is returned to school each day as your child will also be given class time to complete this.  Thank you!
*Thank you to Tony for brining in a soccer ball for the class to use during recess/lunch

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend in the sunshine!

April 1st, 2016

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break!  I can't believe that it is now April!  Here are a few reminders/updates.  Please also see the April calendar updates on this blog.

*Club RED begins today!  Please read with your child every day and initial the flower on their calendar.  They can then colour it in.  Calendars will be collected at the beginning of May and all of the days must be coloured in for your child to be a Club Red member.  If you miss the occasional day, please double up on the following day to make sure that your child is meeting the daily time expectation.  Thank you!  (All students received the letter of explanation/calendar today-except Myra who is absent and will receive hers on Monday)

*Please go on the parent portal to sign up for the Peter Pan play at the ACT theater on April 14th.  You can pay online or send in cash.  The parent driver section was not completed when the notice was posted so you will need to contact me if you are able to drive.  So far I only have enough drivers for 10 students.  Please remember that if you are volunteering to drive you will need to have a driver's abstract on file in the office.

*The 'special' days for Club Red are posted in the calendar section of this blog.  There will be a special day each Friday in February. This includes newly added treat days:  April 7th and 8th-Treat day $1 for freezies, chips or popsicles

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Friday 4 March 2016

Happy 100 Day!

We had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school today.  We did this as a whole school this year and it was a big success.  The intermediate students took a leadership role and it was a great community building event.  It is hard to believe that next week is the last week before spring break.  Please see below for some important reminders/information about the week.

*conferences are coming this Wednesday and Thursday.  Please see the conference link on this website if you have not already signed up.
*Grandparents day is also this Wednesday.  Please send a grandparent (or you are welcome to come yourself) and enjoy a family celebration
*Wednesday is also an early dismissal day (11:15)
*Friday is 'Crazy Hair Day' for anyone who would like to participate
*cans of food will still be collected on Monday.  We have collected 349 so far!
*we don't have any balls/equipment left in our class (basketballs, soccer balls, squash or racquetball balls for wall ball).  I put an order in for the school in December but there have been some ordering issues that are still being dealt with.  If anyone has any extra equipment in their garage that they would like to donate to the class that would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

February 26, 2016

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all have been outside enjoying the beautiful weather.  We had a great time playing out in the forest today and it has been great seeing the kids out skipping at recess and lunch.  I am amazed at the progress everyone has made!  The next couple of weeks leading into spring break are very busy so here is a summary of the upcoming events along with a few reminders.

*Tuesday, March 1, 2016 is our 'Jumprope for Heart' event.  Please send your child in comfortable clothes and with a water bottle.  All donations can be collected in the envelope provided or can be made online at:  www.jumpropeforheart.ca/  Please mention your child's name and Fairview Elementary if you choose this option.

*Friday, March 4th is 100 Day!  Please send in cans (food donations) before/on this day.  We will be keeping track of how many 'hundreds' of cans we can collect for the 'Friends in Need' Food bank.  Our goal is to collect 100 cans per grade level!  I have also talked to students about bringing in an optional 100 day project.  I can provide paper for this and students are welcome to create a 100 day art piece on this, build a lego project etc.  Again, this is optional and we will be setting up 100 day projects in the library for a tour by each class in the afternoon.  Be creative and have fun!

*March 9th/10th are conference days.  Please sign up for a conference if you have not already done so.  I will not be sending home reminders as you can access your booking online.  If you need any help booking please see me or send a message in your child's planner and I will assist you with this.  The link is to sign up is available on this blog in the 'useful links' list.  Thank you!

*March 9th is also 'grandparents day'.  Your child has brought home an invitation for this in his/her planner today.  Details are also available on the school website.  If your child does not have a grandparent that is available a family friend, neighbor, aunt, uncle etc. can attend.  If no one can attend then I will buddy your child up with another student and his/her grandparent.

*Mrs. Watkins has asked us to remind parents to please contact the school if your child is going to be absent.  You can phone the school at 604 465-9331 or use the link provided on the school website:
http://schools.sd42.ca/fairview/ (in green strip, click on 'email us')

*Friday, March 11th will be the last day of school before Spring Break!

Finally, please ask your children about their owl pellet dissecting experience.  We had a great time doing this on Wednesday, all of the children were great sports about it and even the ones who were initially a little unsure about the process became enthralled once they started!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Happy Valentine's Day!

We are looking forward to delivering our Valentines and enjoying our party this afternoon.  Thank you to Priya, Jaxon, Vincent, Luca and Kaitlyn and their parents for sending in snacks for the party (especially to Priya's mom who dropped by a treat even though Priya had to stay home due to illness).  We hope you feel better soon, Priya!

The PAC is doing a fundraiser on Feb. 18th at Boston Pizza.  If 25 people in total eat at the restaurant between 5:00 and 8:00 then we get 10% of the night's take.  You don't have to attend as one group.  You can just go as a family and mention that you are with Fairview.  Thank you!

The conference link is now up!  Just click on it and it will walk you through the steps (the link can be found to the right of this post in the 'useful links' list.

Our bakesale raised $525!  Thank you again to everyone who donated treats and our parent volunteers who helped organize/sell them.  We will be able to help a lot of owls with that money!

Reminder that next Thursday/Friday are Pro D and Curriculum days so there will be no school for students.  We will not have spelling next week due to this.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Here are a few important updates/reminders:

*Friday and Monday are holidays
*Tuesday we will be going on a field trip to the ACT theater, please send a booster seat with your child on Tuesday
*Valentine's Day will be celebrated on February 12th.  I have written who is brining treats for our party in a previous post, along with the list of everyone's names so that each child receives a Valentine.  The 'Poetry and More' duotang also has everyone's name in the 'Sailing' song,  I have asked everyone to add Brayden's name to that list.
*The OWL bake sale was a HUGE success!!!!  Thank you to everyone who sent treats and to the parent helpers who volunteered.  We will be counting up the total earned in math today.  It looks like we should be able to help a lot of owls!!!
*there will be an assembly on Tuesday morning.  Our class will be singing the 'Owl' song they have been learning with Mrs. Godfrey

Have a great Family Day weekend, everyone!

Friday 29 January 2016

January 29, 2016

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all have a terrific weekend!  Here are some updates and reminders about the upcoming weeks.

*next Wednesday is our bake sale.  Please send in treats for the sale and a loonie or twoonie so your child can purchase a treat or two.  All funds raised will be donated to the O.W.L Society.
*****VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED FOR THIS, PLEASE SEE THE PREVIOUS POST    FOR THE TIMES*****

*Our 'ACT' field trip is coming up on Tuesday, February 9th.  Thank you to Luca's mom (2), Max's mom (4), Tony's mom (3), Jaxon's mom (3), Vincent's mom (4) and Emily's mom (3) for driving (the number beside your name is the number of children I have recorded that you can take, if this number is incorrect please contact me on Monday)  Mrs. Rowledge-Toscani's parents have a little room to help us out but we are still in need of one more driver if someone is available.  Please contact me on Monday if you are.  Thank you!!!

*Scholastic book orders are coming home today and are due on February 10th.  Remember that you can now pay online.

*We had our first spelling quiz today!  Everyone was very excited.  I have told the students that next week I will not be allowing capitals in words when they are not needed-those will be marked as incorrect.  Please encourage your students to practice using lower case letters at home to help them develop this good habit.

*Thank you to Brianna's dad for volunteering during our owl stations on Wednesday.  They were a lot of fun!

*A correction on the calendar-our Valentine's party is on Friday, Feb. 12th (thanks to Luca's mom for letting me know of my error).  Please see the previous post for who is brining treats and a list of the class names for writing Valentines.

*I have added a new link to our blog, it is the song the boys and girls have learned with Mrs. Godfrey (see poetry and more books).  Enjoy the song, it is catchy!!!!

*Also, a reminder that while I encourage the boys/girls to go outside rain or shine I will not be allowing them to go out if they aren't dressed appropriately for the weather or have a change of clothes (unless you send me a note saying otherwise).  Some students are showing up with light hoodies on expecting to go outside in the pouring rain during choice days.  They then spend the remainder of the day complaining about being wet :)  Thank you for sending appropriate gear or a change of clothes so that they can go outside whenever the opportunity arises! :)

January 22, 2015

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few updates and requests for volunteers.  We have a busy few weeks ahead of us!

*we are still short drivers for our field trip to the ACT theater, please contact me if you are able to help out with this (see monthly calendar or the parent portal notice for details-all students must be given permission via the parent portal)
*volunteers are needed this upcoming Wednesday, January 27th.  We have planned some owl stations in the library and we would need your help from 12:45-2:00.  Please see me or write a note in your child's planner if you are able to help.  Thank you!
*February 3rd Divisions 6, 7 and 9 are putting on a bake sale.  This is a fundraiser so that we can 'adopt' some owls (by this we mean donate money to the OWL foundation so that they can take care of some owls on our behalf). We will need your help in order to make this a success.  Thank you in advance for supporting this endeavour.

1) Please send in some baked goods on that day
2) Please send in a loonie/twoonie for your child to purchase a treat
3) We will also need parent volunteers to help sell the goodies at recess (we'd need you about 9:20 to set up) until 10:30.  We would also need volunteers over the lunch break to sell treats (12:10-1:00)  If there are enough leftovers we will also sell on the 4th and will need volunteers for this.

As you know, we are studying owls at the moment and our students are very excited about the opportunity to help some injured/sick animals be taken care of so they can be released into the wild again (if possible).

Also, some of you may be eager to begin Valentine's cards.  Here is a list of the students in our class.  Please ensure that everyone is included.  Thank you!

Kaitlyn, Luca, Max, Myra, Danielle, Tony, Cameron, Kevin, Cadence, Kenyone, Duncan, Novah, Stephanie, Jaxon, Priya, Vincent, Emily, Daniel, Taylor, Jacob, Camille, Brianna, Young Hoon, Brayden

Our Valentine's Day party will be on February 14th.  Thanks in advance to these people for sending in treats:  Vincent (fruit plate), Luca (veggie plate), Kaitlyn (cheese/crackers), Priya (sweet treat), Jaxon (popcorn, chips or pretzels)

Have a great weekend everyone.  Please let me know if you are able to volunteer for any of the above activities.
