*Please note:  Popcorn sale tomorrow
*Thank you to everyone who brought in treats for our Valentine's Day party, we had a great afternoon

Dear Parents,
We have some special days coming up in February/March that I wanted to remind/update you on.
As you know, Grandparents Day is coming on February 26th.  We are combining this with the 100th day of school this year.  Please note that students are welcome to bring another adult if grandparents aren't available or I will pair them up with another child/their grandparent if no one can make it.
For our celebration, one of the activities we would like to do is a cup cake decorating station.  If I could please have 2 parents who are willing to bake 24 cupcakes each, that would be a big help. Please email me at amanda_roberts@sd42.ca if you are able to do this.  We will be icing  and decorating the cupcakes here so just plain cupcakes would be great.  Here is an outline from Mrs. Watkins on the plan for the day.
Grandparent day timeline:
12:30 Grandparents arrive at the gym……. Coffee, sandwiches and cookies will be served.
12:40-1:15ish Mrs. Watkins will meet with Grandparentsin the gym
1:15 ish Mrs. Watkins will ‘dismiss’ the grandparents, they will head to our classes.  Maps/room lists will be available.
1:15-2ish Activities in class with students and their grandparents
******Our Scholastic Book Fair will be open during this time*****
Students should make a collection/project of 100 things to bring in and display before February 26th.  They can be creative here.  Please let me know if you need paper for this assignment.
*Reminder that we are also going skating that week (February 28th).  At this point, I only have 1 volunteer driver.
*Our student teachers are returning in 2 weeks and will be learning to plan a field trip.  We will be helping them use the portal at this time. You will get an official email regarding our field trip the week of February 25th which we realize is a short turn around so we are emailing you to 'Save the Date'. As part of our connections unit, we are booked to go to the ACT theater for a play that begins at 9:30 am on Wednesday March 6th .
Also, just a reminder that it is Club Red month and your child should be Reading Each Day and colouring the calendar after you intial each square.
Happy Family Day, Everyone!
Amanda Roberts

Hi Everyone,

I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the little bit of snow we had.  We have been enjoying the sunny, cold weather at school.

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*Flashlight reading is this Friday, please send in a flashlight and book with your child
*We are celebrating Valentine's next Wednesday, February 13th due to the NID on February 14th, please see the previous post for a list of who is bringing snacks for the party and the names of everyone in our class (for writing Valentines)
*Our leadership students are going to be having a popcorn sale on Friday.  Please send $1 with your child if you would like them to purchase some.  They are only popping 100 bags for this initial trial so it isn't guaranteed everyone will get one.  They do hope to do this regularly, however, if it is successful.
*We have a new student teacher in our class.  Her name is Jennifer Klimmer and she is an SFU student.  She is observing in the class this week and will then be heading back to SFU for 2 weeks.  When she returns, she will be doing some lessons with the class over a 3 week period.  We are all really excited about having her here :)  Please pop in and say hello if you have a free moment before/after school.
*We will be going skating on February 28th, we will be sending a permission form via the parent portal soon.  Drivers will be needed for this field trip.  Please ensure you have a current driver's abstract if you would like to volunteer.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few updates/reminders and some pictures of our owl pellet dissection.  Everyone in the class was very focused and loved finding all of the bones, especially the skulls!  We were able to use our charts to try to identify which animals our owls may have eaten.  Thank you to everyone for sending in the tweezers.  We used these, along with rubber gloves and magnifying glasses to work like real scientists.

*We go out for 'Forest Fun' every Tuesday, rain or shine.  Please ensure that your child is dressed for this, they should be prepared to be outside every day at recess/lunch as our district does have a 'West Coast Recess' policy

*Our field trip is coming up next week!  I will be sending home an email tomorrow with details on which parents will be attending for free and how many we can include on the bus.

*This Friday is a 'Curriculum Day' for teachers.  Students do not attend school.

*Fairview will be having our first 'Family Fun Movie Night'.  Here is the information from the grade 7  host teachers, Mrs. Davidson and Mrs. Acaster.  Tickets do need to be purchased in advance.  It is a family movie night but if you are unable to attend, there will be adults available to supervise students, please check in with Mrs. Davidson or Acaster if this is the case.

When: January 31st, 2019
Where: Fairview Gym
What time: 5:45pm-730pm
What Movie: Daddy Day Care
How much: $2/ ticket
There will be popcorn and candy bags sold.
All ages are welcome.

I hope you can make it!

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

January 16/18

Hi Everyone,

I am sending out this post a little early this week with a couple of reminders.  We are presently wrapping up our owl unit and are about to move onto the body/nutrition.  If anyone works in the medical field and would like to come in and talk to us about anything related to our upcoming theme, please let me know and we will set up a time.  Thank you!

*If you are able to, please send in some tweezers in a labeled bag for our owl pellet dissection which will be happening tomorrow

*A big thank you to everyone who sent in food for our party last week, our new years party was a big success!  Also, a big thank you for the extra noisemakers...we had a blast with them :)

*A parent has let me know that you had to sign up as a driver for the field trip to Science World, even though we are taking the bus.  If you have signed up 'to drive' I will assume that means you want to come as a volunteer on the bus.  If this is incorrect, please email me at amanda_roberts@sd42.ca

*It is 'Decades Day' at Fairview on Friday for anyone who would like to participate (dress up as someone from any previous decade)

*New book bag books will be coming home today.  Please ensure that your child brings these to school daily.  They should be reading these (or other materials) each night for 10-15 minutes

*I will be sending home the spelling duotangs today.  Please take a look/help your child with corrections or to complete their work and return them tomorrow.  Duotangs can come home again tomorrow night if you are busy this evening.  I normally will only send the spelling home on Wednesday if your child needs to finish their work.  Please note:  there is a letter to parents at the front of the spelling duotang

*Just a reminder that I am now coaching on Tuesdays/Thursdays after school.  If you child is not picked up at 2:20 I will send them to the office when I leave for the practices/games so that they have an adult nearby.

Thank you,

Amanda Roberts

January 9/18

Happy New Year, Everyone!

This will be a brief post as I sent a lot of the information you need to know on an email earlier this week.

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*Friday we will have our class party.  Students can wear Pj's that day and need to bring a mug for hot chocolate (provided by our PAC).  They can also bring a noisemaker for our New Year's Eve count down if they like.

*reminder that your children all received a coupon for a free Scholastic book for up to $6 for their Christmas present from me this year.  Please order online this month or wait for a future order if there isn't anything that appeals to your child.  They have until June to use it.  Thank you!

*Some students needed a little more time to finish their book bag books so I have told them I will trade them out early next week.  Please ensure that your child's book bag is in his/her back pack on Monday so that I can collect them.  Thank you!

*You will be receiving a portal announcement regarding our upcoming field trip to Science World where we will be learning about the human body and watching an Omnimax film about Pandas.  A big thank you to the PAC for augmenting the cost of the bus to make it a more affordable outing.  This will be our big field trip of the year, we decided to do it earlier as it supports the unit we will be focusing on and it is often difficult to get bus transportation in June.

*I am now coaching basketball on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.  If you are unable to pick up your child at 2:20 on those days I will be asking them to wait at the office so that there is an adult nearby if they need assistance.  Thank you!

*I have added January dates to the 'Monthly Calendar'

*We will be starting our spelling program next week.  Students will be writing their words in their planners on Mondays.  They will do activities with these words throughout the week to develop their vocabulary and learn about patterns (and exceptions...there are lots of those) in the English language. Please do not be concerned if the words are too easy for your child.  There will be the opportunity to try some challenging 'bonus' words that use the same pattern and we will also be expanding the words through our activities.  You can even challenge your child at home by coming up with some more difficult words to 'test' them on.  We will work on our spelling activities during school Monday-Wednesday and then anything that is not complete will be sent home for homework on Wednesday nights.  We will have a small quiz (5 words plus 2 bonus words) on Fridays.  Thank you in advance for your help with this program.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Amanda Roberts

It is hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner.  There is a lot of excitement in the building right now :).  Thank you to everyone for attending our concert this year.  We hope you enjoyed our rendition of 'Dominic the Donkey'.  A big thank you to Dr. Saul for organizing the choreography and practicing with the students in music.

*Next week will be our last week of school before the break.  We will be having our Christmas Party on the last day of school (December 21st) in the afternoon.  Thank you in advance to the following people who are sending in treats that day:

Avery (fruit plate),  Paityn (veggie plate),  Eugene (Cheese/crackers), Madden (sweet treat),

*I will be sending home new JRR books next week so that the students have new reading material for over the holidays.

*I still have a few students who have not had their 'Owls and More' payment made yet.  I will be contacting these people by email next week.  If you aren't sure if you've paid, please contact me at amanda_roberts@sd42.ca as I have been keeping an account with the office

*We will be continuing our Christmas crafts this Friday and next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 9:30.  Please contact me if you would like to come and help any of those days.  Thank you!
