 Hi Everyone,

I hope you and your loved ones are all well.  We are busy wrapping up our Owl unit and will be beginning our study of the human body/good health practices soon.   Your children have learned so much about owls and look forward to sharing their lap books with you before we meet (via Zoom) for conferences in March.

*we will be celebrating Valentines Day on February 12th.  We recently received a very detailed email regarding Health and Safety around this holiday (below).   

Valentine Cards

Valentine card exchange is permitted as long as the cards are basic paper cards (cards with pens, stickers or candies are NOT permitted at this time).

Please ensure that you follow these restrictions due Covid 19.   If you have already purchased Valentine's with pens, stickers or candies, please remove these items before sending them to school.  I apologize for any inconvenience.

We will continue with sharing the pre-packaged foods on the date of the party as those are still allowed.  Please send them into the school by Wednesday, February 10th.

*we will start Week 2 spelling on Tuesday, January 26th (due to the ProD Day on Monday).  Students will get extra class time to complete the sheet and unfinished work will be brought home on Wednesday and Thursday nights each week.  Please send the duotang back to school each day.  

*a reminder that tomorrow will be our first spelling quiz (5 words from the list plus 2 bonus words).  I will do my best to mark the quiz and send it home the same day.

 Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all well.  Everyone is now settled back into our class routines (this can be challenging for everyone after the holidays :)) and we are back to learning about owls.  We also began a unit on courage today and will be focusing on courage in literacy every Thursday with our district literacy teacher, Anita Neufeld.

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*for homework each week, please discuss with your child times when they had to show courage (example: getting a shot, trying something for the first time, speaking up for themselves, making a good choice when it was difficult, being the new person at school, soccer etc.)

*Monday we will be starting our weekly spelling program.  A letter will be in the front pouch of your child's planner that day which will outline the details.  Please help them study their words and notice the patterns, we will have a 5 word quiz each week (plus 2 bonus words).  Class time will be given to complete the spelling worksheet but it will be sent home for homework on Wednesdays if it's not complete.

*Thank you for your continued support with sending in masks, the children who are able to wear them have been very responsible about keeping them in an appropriate spot when they aren't wearing them. 

*Please send in headphones/ear buds if you have not already done so 

*Just a reminder to please send in a change of clothes.  These will only be used if your child is soaking wet, but we do have a drainage problem at Fairview and a large percentage of the grounds do become covered with puddles/mud when we have a lot of rain

*There is a NID (no school for students) on Monday, January 25th

*February 1st to the 12th there will be a scholastic book fair online (more information to follow)

*We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, February 12th. I will post class names closer to this date.

*February 15 is Family Day and February 16th is a Non-Instructional Day

January 8th

 Happy New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays.  I will keep this post brief due to the email I sent home earlier in the week. We had an outstanding owl presentation (via Zoom) this week by the rehabilitation society, O.W.L .  Please ask your children what they learned about owls,  I know that I learned some new facts from this virtual field trip!  We were even lucky enough to see two live owls!

*a big thank you to the PAC whose funds have paid for the previous two virtual field trips to enhance our learning about owls

*it appears that several students received masks for Christmas, thank you for continuing to encourage mask wearing at school.  We watched an excellent 'Mystery Doug' on Monday that explained how masks work.

*the math game in the 'Poetry and More' duotang says multiplication on it.  Please feel free to play the game using addition, that's what we did in class

*as mentioned in the email earlier this week, a district-provided mask is in your child's backpack (hopefully their planner pocket as that is where I asked them to put it :))

*scholastic came home this week if anyone is interested in ordering, this can be done online and the books are delivered directly to your home this year

*we started off the new year choosing 3 goals and listing the steps that we need to take to be successful in achieving these goals

 Hi Everyone,

I hope you and your families are all well.  The latest announcement from Bonnie Henry ensures that Christmas will look different for us all this year, but I hope you are still enjoying the holiday season.  I have noticed, on my evening walks that the displays of lights are quite beautiful this year and driving/walking to see them is a great (and free) Covid friendly activity for the whole family.

*We will be gratefully accepting cash donations and/or gift cards for the MRPM Hamper Society up until Monday, December 14th.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept toys this year.

*A big thank you to the following people for sending treats for our holiday party.  Please send these pre-wrapped treats in by Wednesday, December 16th.  The party will take place on the afternoon of the 18th but I will need time to purchase any items that don't arrive by the 16th.  Thank you!  Students should still bring a recess snack, lunch and water bottle as usual as we will be enjoying our party snacks later in the day.

 Hi Everyone,

December is here and Christmas is in the air!  I hope you are all well and are having the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.

Updates/Reminders/Thank you's

*Our school is currently collecting money and  $25 gift cards for the Hamper Society.  Please send these in before December 14th if you would like to participate.  Normally my class takes the leadership for this fundraiser and we gather hundreds of dollars and numerous toys for this worthy cause but, sadly,  Covid has prevented the usual format from happening this year.

*Dr. Saul is working hard to prepare all of the classes for the virtual Christmas concert.  He is planning on recording the students' voices on Monday, December 7th and will film them on Thursday, December 10th.  This is the date students should wear their outfits to school. (Please send extra clothes and write a note in your child's planner if you need them to change as we will still be going outside)  Our song, 'Dominick the Donkey' is a very old and takes place in Italy.  We thought it would be interesting to be present the song in black and white.  So, with that in mind, your child is encouraged to wear dark pants/skirt and a white/light top (dressy if possible).  Dr. Saul has asked us to emphasize to parents that STUDENTS SHOULD NOT WEAR GREEN.  This is because he is filming in front of a green screen :) Please do not feel the need to purchase any new clothing items.  I also have 7 Dominick hats that some students would like to wear.  I collected the names of interested students and put them into a draw.  The students who were selected are:  Leland Sam Carys Olivia Zoe Capri and Aiden

If your child is not wearing a Dominick hat, they are welcome to wear a Santa hat, fedora or some other festive headwear that you may have.  Again, please do not feel the need to go shopping.

*Our Fairview leadership group thought it would be fun to have a Spirit Week for the last week before Christmas break (December 14-18th).  Here is the schedule that they have created.

*The published report card was sent today.  You will find it in your child's planner bag.  This report (and the draft if you want both) can stay at home now.  There is no need for a parent signature this year due to Covid.

*We will be having our class Christmas celebration on Friday, December 18th.  I will include a reminder list of who is bringing party treats on next week's blog.

*A big thank you to Noah's family for donating some Christmas books to the class, along with some bouncy balls and a game.  We have really been enjoying them.

Dear Families,

I am hoping, at this point, you have had the chance to read the letter from Mrs. Gallop regarding the reopening of Fairview on Tuesday, November 24th.  I recognize that this unexpected period of time off has presented challenges for you as parents and I am sure your children have a lot of questions. Due to the nature of the incident at Fairview, I am not allowed to share specific information. I will tell you that the  time allotted to recreate spaces that will ease your child's transition back into school has been necessary. I am really looking forward to seeing them all when they return to school on Tuesday. 

Some of you have emailed regarding your child's concern about their personal belongings and work being damaged/removed.  Fortunately, the damage to those particular items in our room has been minimal so I hope your children will find some reassurance knowing that.  Some bulletin boards/art work were destroyed but I am happy to provide the opportunity for students to recreate these pieces if they would like to.

There are some things in the room that will look different but we are doing everything we can to minimize this and the support from Fairview staff and the community, in general has been tremendous. It will take some time but we will get our building back to where it was. Counsellors will be available on site Tuesday for anyone who needs support.  We recognize that, for some, this is a traumatic event and there will be a range of responses as your children return to school.   

Thank you for your understanding and the numerous messages of support you have sent.  They have been much appreciated.  This has been a challenging week for parents, students and staff.

*Tuesday, November 24th is Fairview Spirit Day. Students can wear their Fairview colours (gold or yellow/blue)

*If you are able to take your child to the cenotaph to deliver their rock, please take a photo and email it amanda_roberts@sd42.ca so that I can include it in their memory books

*The children received their poppies today, if anyone would like to send in donations please do so on Friday. Thank you!

*Fairview is having a clothing drive to help support people in need as we head into winter.  The following items would be gratefully accepted up until November 24th 1) Clean adult socks 2) Gently used jackets and sweaters 3) Clean gloves, mats and scarves 4) Monetary donations

*November 24th will also be 'Spirit Day'!  Wear your Fairview colours to show your school spirit (blue and yellow)

*Please sign up for one conference time/child.  Your child needs to be part of the Zoom conference.  A rough draft of the report and some of you child's work will be sent home prior to our meeting.
