Hi Everyone,
February is looking like a very busy month! You will have received a red calendar and letter explaining 'Club Red' in your child's planner on Wednesday. This is a school wide program and we really hope that everyone participates. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Updates/Reminders/Questions
*February 2nd is our first special reading day. Please send a flashlight with your child along with a book he/she would like to read. We are buddying with a Kindergarten class so please send picture books
*The PAC just gave us a poster to hang in our windows: There will be treat days on February 6th and 7th (frozen yogurt-$2 and chips $1)
*The Leadership group also just started putting up posters in the hallway that they are doing a bakesale fundraiser for the people of Haiti on February 8th.
*It will be the 100th day of school on February 27th. Please remember that we are 'wearing' our 100 day projects this year.
*We will have our class Valentine's Day party on Wednesday, February 14th. Thanks in advance to the following people for sending snacks: Cheese/crackers (Danika), Sweet Treat (Angelina), Popcorn and/or Chips (Carter) and 'Other' (Wyatt). We don't have anyone signed up to bring a small veggie tray for this party but if anyone would like to please email me. Thank you!
*Here is a class list for anyone who would like to get started on making Valentine's cards:
Lucas Paityn Cash Eugene Dyllan Logan Isabella Riana Danika Angelina
Landon Collette Wyatt Nevaeh Carter Quinn Averyelle Mataya Royce Austyn
*Reminder that we are skating in the afternoon on February 20th. We have submitted our field trip form to Mrs. Watkins for approval so you should be receiving an email via the parent portal if you have not already done so.
*There will be a literacy night for parents on February 15th from 6:00-7:00. More information is on the Fairview Facebook Page and Website. Babysitting will be available and you will have the opportunity to stay for half an hour after the meeting to read with your child. Please RSVP if you plan to participate (see below)
*The week of February 20th, students can bring in 1-3 books to donate to the book swap. On Friday, everyone will be able to select 1 book to take home.
I have updated the calendar on this blog to include the additional dates mentioned above. As I mentioned earlier, it is going to be a fun and busy month.
Thank you for all of your support,
Amanda Roberts

Hi Everyone!
We have had a busy and exciting week in Division 8! We were fortunate enough to have Leyton Schnellert co-teach a lesson in our class on Tuesday. He is an 'educator of educators' and several teachers from the district came in to observe. Short video clips of the lesson were taken and will be used for teaching purposes with other educators. Your children were all very engaged and came up with thoughtful answers to Mr. Schnellert's questions. He was very impressed! We were focusing on a story about compassion called 'The Invisible Boy' if you would like to talk to your child about it.
Today we were fortunate enough to have 'Dan' come in and talk to us about local wild animals. We now all know what to do if we encounter a cougar or bear. Dan even brought in a stuffed cougar and a bear skin that we all had the opportunity to touch!
Reminders/Updates/Thank you's
*There seems to be some confusion regarding the 'lice letter' that came home with all students in the school this week. Many people signed/returned it but the letter indicated to only return it if you did NOT want your child checked. I completely understand your confusion and I noticed that nobody had checked 'No' so I assume you all want your children checked. If this is NOT the case, please email me and let me know. Thank you!
*on February 1st we will be starting 'Club Red' (information package to follow). Our first special school wide read will be 'Flashlight Reading'. Students should bring a flashlight from home for this. I just wanted to give you a 'heads up' now in case you need to purchase/find a flashlight :)
*There is no school for students tomorrow (Professional Development Day for teachers)
*Please ensure that you check your child's backpack for spelling homework on Wednesday and/or Thursday nights and offer help as needed. Thank you!
*Just a reminder that the book in your child's book bag that has a post-it in it is for their Reader's Workshop presentation and that they should practice the pages they are presenting at night

Hi Everyone,
This week we started our spelling program and you will have received an outline of our weekly plan. Some of you may have had your child's duotang sent home on Wednesday and/or Thursday. This is because they were unable to finish it during class time and I felt they would benefit from some extra help at home (there were several student's needing this help this week but that will decrease as their comfort level increases). This will be the weekly procedure and I ask that you please keep the spelling book in the planner bag once finished with it as I we will be using them on Thursdays. Students who are still not finished can take the spelling book home on Thursday night and return it on Friday. A fun way that your child can practice his/her spelling words is to go onto 'Spelling City' (on this site). Please note: The 'green' word lists are for people with 'purple' paper. We will have our 5 word quiz on Fridays. Thank you for your help/support with this.
Updates/Reminders/Thank you's
*Scholastic is due by Thursday, Jan. 25th for those of you who are interested
*Thank you to Dyllan's mom for organizing the Scholastic magazines for us each month
*Please help your child complete his/her home work in the poetry and more duotang this weekend
*Save-the-Date: February 20th we will be skating in the afternoon (there will be a parent portal announcement closer to-drivers will be needed, please)
*Tuesday, February 27th will be our 100th day of school-I am letting you know well in advance that our primary students will all be 'Wearing 100' on that day. This means your child can make a necklace or bracelet out of 100 beads, fruit loops etc. or they can draw 100 of something on a t-shirt or hat. Whatever you and your child come up with is great, just keep in mind that they will be wearing it for at least part of the day and we will be having a 100 Day Parade with the other primary
classes to enjoy everyone's creations.
*next week we will have our spelling quiz on Thursday due to the Professional Development Day on Friday (no school for students, Jan. 26, 2018)
I will put the other February dates on the blog calendar soon.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday. It sounds like the students really enjoyed all of the family time.
We typically try to keep January as a quieter month to allow the students the opportunity to gently slide back into the expectations and pace of school life so there aren't many 'extra' activities such as field trips or visitors to the classroom. Please see the calendar on this blog for an outline of what is happening at the class/school level.
Updates/Reminders/Thank you's
*the PAC has kindly offered to provide free hot chocolate to all of the students on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 16th. Please send a labeled mug with your child as they will not be providing these. Thank you!
*I will be coaching the girls basketball team on Tuesdays and Fridays and will need to leave almost immediately after the bell in order to meet up with the team. If you are late picking your child up on those days I will be sending them to sit at the office to wait for you so that they are properly supervised.
*if you have not already done so, please send in earbuds for your child (dollar store ones are fine)
*also, please send in inside shoes and a change of clothes to be kept at the school

Dear Parents,
We are having a busy and fun month in Division 8. We are going to put our 'Canada' unit on pause until January and will be spending the next couple of weeks focusing on the holiday season and winter. The students are very excited to begin making their crafts next week and they are wondering when our class 'Elf on the Shelf' will arrive :)
Updates/Reminders/Thank you's
*Our field trip is next Friday and there are still several people who have not signed up via the parent portal and we do not have enough driver volunteers. Please sign your child up if you have not already done so. Reminder: If you are driving, you will need to have a current driver's abstract in the office. Please email me at amanda_roberts@sd42.ca if you are unsure and I will check for you.
*We have our skating field trip the following week (Tuesday, December 19th) and we are also short drivers for this event
*Our Christmas Concerts are next week! Please see the previous posts regarding our costume (pyjamas) and when to where them. Tickets will come home with the oldest child (in their planner) Friday, December 8th, 2017. THE CLASSROOM DOOR WILL BE OPEN TO STUDENTS AT 6:15 on the night of the evening performance
*Just a reminder that I have added all of the important dates in December on our classroom blog under the 'Monthly Calendar' Thank you!
*The students will be getting new Just Right Reading books this upcoming Wednesday. Remember that RAZ kids and the book they sign out daily can supplement their reading if they finish all of the books in their bag. Also, please note that the book that has a post-it in it is their Reader's Workshop book so they need to practice their pages at home
*Students should continue to practice their concert songs this weekend, please. You will also see another 'Zones' worksheet in your child's Poetry and More duotang which they can discuss with you. Jamie, our 'Childcare Worker' is coming in each week to teach us about this self-regulation program
*Our class party will be in the afternoon on the last day of school. Thank you in advance to the following people for sending snacks for the party: Paityn (fruit plate), Wyatt (veggie plate), Nevaeh (sweet treat), Isabella (popcorn or chips), Cash (other). PLEASE NOTE: We won't be eating snacks at the party in the late afternoon so students should bring a snack/lunch as usual. Thank you!
A big thank you once again to Collette's grandpa for cutting wood for us once again. You will love what the kids are going to make with it!
