In grade 2/3 we begin to do more 'multi-step' math such as adding and subtracting 2-3 digit numbers with/with out regrouping. If you would like to help support your child's math growth at home it would be really helpful if you helped them develop the speed of their addition/subtraction facts. Gaining speed and confidence in this area will help your child be better able to focus on the new concept (it is easy to get 'lost' when you are spending a lot of time on the basic adding/subtracting). If you would like to practice this with your child at home, a deck of cards or dice can be used to add/subract and play games with. Your child can teach you some of the games we have played at school.
We also work on place value and 'reading' 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. You can play 'Place value' snap to increase speed/accuracy in this area. How to play : Each person takes half of the deck, flip over 2-4 cards (depending on your child's level) and make the biggest number you can with those digits. The person with the largest numbers gets to keep playing both sets of cards.
ABCya (in the 'Useful Links' area of this blog) is also a great resource for online games that reinforce the concepts we are learning at school.
Please email/see me if you have any further questions.
